But you’re less hypothetical

Russell’s spell worked exactly as he said it would, and Holland did their best to commit his wand movement and incantation to memory. He sort of mumbled it, so they would likely ask later. It could never hurt to know an extra spell, especially one that produced effects they didn’t have any similar spells for. Holland couldn’t think of any wind-producing spells, and while glacius made things cold by freezing, it wasn’t quite the same as what Russell was doing.

They kept walking through the mostly-visible forest until they circled back to the cleared field that represented the civilized part of the outdoor classroom. The course brought them to a sheer wooden wall with a platform on the other side. The wall was about two Hollands tall, or maybe a bit less. Either way, Holland was sure that working together, they could—

Russell galloped into the wall like a drunk kangaroo.

Holland stared at him, wondering what made their classmate think that running straight at the wall would get him over it. Maybe the white smoke from earlier was a potion, either a hallucinogen or possibly something which induced dyskinesia. There was nothing magical about the obstacle as far as Holland could tell. It was just a wall.

“Yes,” they told Russell as he got to his feet. He seemed all right, but he made a slightly ridiculous suggestion afterwards, so maybe not. Holland looked the fourth-year up and down. Russell seemed to be built mostly like a bowtruckle, and Holland was not optimistic about his ability to boost them anywhere. Holland was not particularly muscular, but thanks to Quidditch they exercised quite a bit, and practicing to sub in for Beaters had done wonders for their arm strength. They thought they could probably boost Russell, and once he was at the top he could either pull them up or create a rope or something.

“I think it makes more sense for me to boost you.” They went over to the base of the wall and put their back to it, linking their hands low in front of them to create a foothold for Russell. If this didn’t work, there were probably a few spells they could try, although both of the ideas that came to mind would destroy the surrounding earth a bit.

“It’s just mud,” they said, not flinching as Russell stepped into their hand. Obviously they’d prefer not getting muddy, but it was a lost cause at this point in the obstacle course. The mud would... more
