Between a log and a muddy place

DADA was more often than not an interesting class, and for this reason it was Danny’s favourite. Also learning about the Dark Arts was cool, and Professor Rasnick was hot. You know, for a professor. Never more so than today, wearing yoga pants. Danny let out a low whistle and shook his head a couple of times before managing to dump his school bag in a pile with the others and attempt to focus on the class. He had decided to wear the black sports pants he typically used for Quidditch practices coupled with a sunny yellow t-shirt that had black stitching detail. The top alone had cost more than a meal out for two in a reasonable restaurant but the fifth year liked the feel of the fabric. It was thick but lightweight, and soft, and the yellow had a sort of illuminating sheen when he moved.

So the class was like a review of the past few years, which seemed like a sensible way to start a new year, but actually far more interesting. Dardanius was not concerned about his physical fitness; it wasn’t so much that he liked to keep in shape, but he liked Quidditch and swimming and these activities had the added benefit of keeping him in shape. Also his mother didn’t let them eat junk food, so the return to school after the summer break was when Danny tended to be at his physical peak. It was, paradoxically for this exercise, when he was at his academic low. He couldn’t pretend that he even picked up a textbook over the holidays, except to pack it back into his trunk. There wasn’t time for him to be concerned, however, as the professor blew her whistle and Danny set off at a sprint.

He hadn’t gone very far when he noticed the logs and the sign. He did consider just carrying one in his arms for about a second, before considering that this was a class, and those logs looked heavy, and maybe levitating one would be better. Professor Rasnick did specify they needed to keep their wands with them. Slowing a little so he could get a good aim, Danny cast Wingardium leviosa, and then he discovered he had to slow a lot more to stop the log from swinging wildly through the air. “Woah,” he laughed, settling into a walk so that he could concentrate on transporting his cargo. “That could have ended differently.”

Arriving at the mud pit, Danny really didn’t want to wade through it. It wasn’t that he was concerned about his clothes - they could be cleaned, or he could buy more - but he didn’t actually like getting dirty. The occasional mudsplatter was no big deal, but wading through a mud pit was a whole new issue. He hesitated for a few moments while he debated his options, and, making a decision, Danny lowered the log down beside him. With his wand free of the levitating charm, the fifth year used it to cast a solidifying charm on the mud, instead. Not the whole area, but just a line from where he was standing to the other side. Tentatively he stepped onto the path he had created. It wasn’t solid like hard ground, it was still a bit soft underfoot, but certainly an improvement on its previous form. He raised his wand again, repeated his earlier charm and once more carried the log overhead as he moved as deftly as he could and a quickly as he dared across the pit.

It was then he heard a sort of cackling, that distracted him so thoroughly he almost toppled to the side and would have landed in the mud. "Dude what the crap was that?" he asked aloud to nobody in particular.

    • But let’s not get dirty - Holland Keene [Lyra 5th Year], Thu Jan 12 13:44
To put it lightly, Holland was less than thrilled to discover that the intermediates were starting with gym class. Wizarding school was supposed to drop fabricated subjects like physical education... more

The transfer’s full name was two first names, which was a thing Holland had always found suspicious, but they answered his question anyway. “Fifth-year. Lyra,” in case the hair wasn’t a giveaway.... more

                • I’m more theoretical - Holland, Sat Jan 14 14:49
Mostly using their arms, Holland pulled themself through the mud under the tarp and decided they would love to never do this again. It was a good thing Frankie wasn’t here—Holland’s Quidditch captain ... more
                  • I'm kind of symmetrical - Russell , Sat Jan 14 17:52
As it turned out, Russell wasn't entirely the odd one out because Holland's education had almost gone the same way that his had. That was interesting. More interesting was hearing that Holland's dad... more
                    • I’m mostly apocryphal - Holland, Sun Jan 15 17:44
Russell’s water charm came out with all the strength of a fire hose, which startled Holland a bit but got the job done. Their own (more restrained) spell was a controlled stream that they used to... more
                      • And a little existential - Russell, Mon Jan 16 02:04
He nodded and flicked his wand in a tight spiral with a mutter. This charm was one Russell had practiced a lot. California was basically all summer; avoiding the sun was inconvenient, but more so was ... more
                        • But you’re less hypothetical - Holland, Tue Jan 17 15:14
Russell’s spell worked exactly as he said it would, and Holland did their best to commit his wand movement and incantation to memory. He sort of mumbled it, so they would likely ask later. It could... more
                          • That's canonical - Russell , Wed Jan 18 19:13
"Oh, really?" was his reply as he tried not to look too relieved. He thought Holland was a little shorter than him, maybe - it was hard to tell accurately since he was still barefoot and that might... more
                            • And not allegorical - Holland, Mon Jan 23 14:13
“It’s just mud,” they said, not flinching as Russell stepped into their hand. Obviously they’d prefer not getting muddy, but it was a lost cause at this point in the obstacle course. The mud would... more

Marissa could tell that her shivering was making Danny feel uncomfortable or something. She was a good actress. She wasn’t the best – she’d never do fancy stuff like her mom did, and she didn’t want... more
