Ruben watched with some amusement as the other fifth-year climbed a neighbouring tree. The Swede wasn’t completely sure why he felt the need to do that, hence his amusement. Conversations always felt a little split-level to him, which wasn’t unexpected, considering his height. To be in a tree had not been so different, then. Although the nature of it was somewhat different. He enjoyed taking advantage of opportunities to show off his physique, and he had certainly done that here in how he’d muscled his way from a chin-up to a seated position. Maybe Holland’s friend had felt intimidated. His smirk broadened at the thought.

The boy apparently agreed that the outdoor spaces for exercising were too crowded, as he expressed surprise at having found Ruben in this area. Ruben shrugged noncommittally, not about to admit to sharing his sentiments. “Should have come earlier than now.” He was probably going to take his own advice; he’d waited until after finishing a light lunch to come down here, and it had been empty then, but presumably it had been empty during the general lunch hour, too. It was sometimes easy to make that decision between exercising and eating, but it was sometimes a harder balance, such as days like today when he’d felt the desire to eat with company instead of working out first and snagging a snack from the empty Diner later.

The boy also apparently disagreed about the value of trees in exercise. (It was around this point that Ruben made a mental note to confirm this dude’s name with Holland later. Seemed a waste to ask him for an introduction now, because he didn’t care quite that much, but if he wanted to get anywhere with Holland and move into hens social circle, it would be convenient to have the difference between ‘Emmett’ and ‘Danny’ actively pointed out to him at some point.) “Trees are better than even exercise machines,” Ruben pointed out in an authoritative tone, a bit of an arrogant arch to his wild eyebrows. “A machine will have its bars always in the same spot, but branches move. To use a branch for muscle training teaches the body flexibility and higher control.”

  • You're Welcome - Dardanius, Mon Apr 17 14:59
The response his advice received of just climbing the tree and sitting in it suggested to Danny that Ruben would fit in just fine with the rest of his friends; with perhaps the exception of Holland,... more

      • Useful how, exactly? - Danny, Thu Apr 20 15:14
Dardanius had not been aware there were machines for exercising. Muggles had machines for everything, so he wasn't surprised, except that this information had not come up before, either in Cultural... more
        • Usefully non-distracting - Ruben, Sun Apr 23 19:19
Admittedly, Ruben hadn't specifically sought out exercise machines at RMI and so was not completely sure whether any existed, but he'd assumed there must be some kind of designated exercise room for... more
          • Challenge not accepted - Danny, Tue Apr 25 16:09
Ruben’s sudden interrogation of his exercise regimes took Danny by surprise, observable by his eyebrows disappearing into his hairline in delighted incredulity. His first audible response was to... more
            • A new challenge, then. - Ruben, Wed May 3 00:19
Ruben appreciated the thoroughness of his answer. The answer itself was unsatisfying, but of course it was: the tall Swede held himself to a standard of exercise that he hardly expected of anyone... more
