Claudia Dubois

Claudia had absolutely no intention of going to the Hallowe’en party whatsoever. Danny had tried to encourage her to go (but why he thought Claudia would listen to him right now when he obviously wasn’t capable of making sensible decisions for himself, let alone anyone else, was beyond her), and Marley had been absolutely insistent that Claudia attend. Connor, however, was planning to sit the event out, and an evening of just Connor’s quiet company in the solitude of the Cetus commons genuinely sounded far more preferable than yet another school-wide commercially propagated holiday themed extravaganza.

Nevertheless, the day came and Marley was so excited and Connor was so… Connor, and Claudia reasoned that if she went and hated it she could always come back inside. She expected to hate it, but she already avoided so many non-compulsory social occasions at school, and she was going to try harder if she didn’t want to spend the next four and a half years with only Connor and Marley as friends.

The conundrum of a costume was quickly overcome. While she didn’t understand the juvenile desire to make herself into a character from a comic or one of those Muggle movie things, Claudia could appreciate the novelty in being something different for one day without anyone questioning why. The third year took her most flowing dress - a coral pink chiffon with a full skirt and flared sleeves - and charmed it jet black. She might need to reapply the spell throughout the evening but that wouldn’t be a problem. She let her dark blonde hair lie loose on her shoulders, its natural light wave suiting her wardrobe choices. Claudia dabbed on some white face powder she’d borrowed from Holland’s theatre makeup, and drew in some black eyeliner she had been practising in her dormitory where nobody could see her. She had planned on charming her teeth to more closely resemble vampiric fangs, but lost her nerve. Nobody would be looking that closely, anyway. The blood-red lipstick was also Holland’s, but the black velvet travelling clock was Claudia’s own. Fastening her black ankle boots she decided not to look at her own reflection again because it was unsettling, so she set off directly for the party.

The journey there was not enjoyable in the slightest, and even though she'd done her best to tag along with some older students, Claudia had still junked on a couple of occasions and her knuckles were white from clenching her fists in barely repressed terror. But the time she made it to the party she lost no time in finding the quietest place possible and taking several long, deliberate breaths. It took a while for her to realise that this was supposed to be a pumpkin carving station and that actually there was another student there, doing just that.

It was a couple more steadying breaths later than Claudia realised she knew the person, and she thought she could be forgiven for not recognising Wyatt, since he was green from head to toe. It was a suitable distraction from her escalated heart rate. “You’re very green,” she said, sounding a little breathless, but she felt calmer now she was in a quiet place with someone she could tolerate.
