Somehow, Danny and Ruben’s fight had pressed the reset button on their friend group, and people were getting along with each other again. At least tentatively. Marissa had organized the group go see The Breakfast Club at a theater on Pearl Street that played old classic movies. It had been nice hanging out with just the core group again—no transfers, no siblings. At some point the Headmaster’s Halloween party had come up and they had collectively (mostly Marissa and Holland) decided to do a group costume. Holland was hugely in favor of that; it was a fun bonding kind of thing.

As a bonus, Holland didn’t have to choose a costume, which they always spent way too long doing. They’d been considering going as a frontier town sheriff. Diana could’ve been their deputy or a tiny little outlaw or something. Fortunately, the substitute Cultural Studies professor and—hilariously—Ruben were running an all-night daycare, so Holland had just dropped the baby doll off and not bothered with a full costume for her. They had still dressed her in an orange onesie with a smiling jack-o’-lantern face on it, because festivities.

Holland was going as Ally Sheedy’s character, The Basket Case. Pre-makeover, because the character looked super unnatural after the princess makeover. Also because the pre-makeover look was more iconic. They’d let their hair be its natural dark brown color for the first time in about eight years, parted it in the middle, and teased it, because the eighties.

For the outfit, Holland already had black sneakers, white socks, and a black sweater. They’d charmed a different pattern onto one of their scarves and borrowed a long grey skirt from Zoey Ludlow, who had lots. Holland was not a huge fan of the monochromatic look, and they also didn’t like wearing skirts much, but it was worth it for the group costume. It was a low-makeup character, but Holland had still done their usual contouring and foundation and then added black eyeliner and mascara. They were all in all pleased with how the costume had turned out and couldn’t wait to see everyone else’s. Holland had of course volunteered their services, and then spent most of the time making Marissa’s hair a more manageable texture. It was still longer than her character’s, but Holland’s was too short for theirs, so whatever.

Holland had read the sign that said “Haunted Trail” just after the childcare area, but they maybe hadn’t taken it as seriously as they should’ve. Which was why when the first thing jumped out of the fog at them, Holland flung a hand out and fired a Stinging Jinx. Their heart rate was still a little too high to appreciate their wandless magic. “Did you see that?” they demanded, seeing another person coming out of the fog on the Haunted Trail. “What was it?”
