Professor Rob Hier
Sweet Surprise [Potions Yrs I - III]
Wed Aug 2, 2017 06:58

It was the second week of classes and already Rob was exhausted. That was less to do with the actual demands of his professional life (he had set his first years to researching potions ingredients while he reviewed with the rest of his students) and more to do with the demands of suddenly having three young children instead of one. Jude had started sitting up on her own and grabbing at things in mid-August, which had been cute for about ten seconds before Rob and Celia realized that they had child-proofed the apartment far less effectively than they thought. With the arrival of Steven and Julia, their child-proofing abilities had been tested further and it had resulted in them asking for Garen’s help. Going from a household of one, relatively contained (if precocious) infant to a household with three children under the age of five had definitely been an adjustment. An adjustment that they were still very much making, and to say that the interim was chaos was to understate.

Consequently, Rob’s lesson planning had fallen a little by the wayside, leaving him on a Friday with nothing really planned for his younger year students. Time for emergency action.

‘Emergency action’ resulted in Rob manually clearing away cauldrons from the tables in the lab, for starters because he couldn’t find a house-elf and his initial attempt at Banishing them with a wave of his wand had resulted in an explosion of red smoke and Lapis’s annoyed bark. The chocolate labrador settled herself with a glare in Rob’s direction once the smoke had dissipated and with a sigh he had begun to wheel himself towards the first table. Once the cauldrons had all been moved to the side (and damn was it hard to wheel yourself around with a cauldron on your lap), Rob set out a large bottle of cream, a container of sugar, some plastic sealable bags, and rock salt on each table.

Although the students would be expected to have most of the ingredients for the lesson in their potions kits, Rob did set out a small array of additional ingredients on the front table. Peppermint leaves, billywig stings, and shrake spine were among those ingredients; Rob had initially thought that shrake spine was a bad idea due to its tendency to explode if the potioneer wasn’t careful, but then he’d decided that a good eyebrow-singeing wouldn’t do too much harm if it came down to it.

Once everything was set up, Rob opened the door to the classroom, then wheeled back to the front table. It was about eye-level with him in his chair, so he always taught sitting to one side of the table.

His beginner students started to trickle in, and Rob greeted them with a grin and a slightly slurred ‘hello’. His speech had never entirely recovered from his third stroke, and although Rob was definitely understandable his slur was still as noticeable as the magical hearing aid in one ear that helped him process speech faster. Introducing himself to new people was always a wild ride (Rob usually managed by turning his snark to the highest setting and letting go) but he had yet to have trouble with this group of kids so he’d toned it down a little. Well, as much as Rob toned anything down.

“Why hello and good afternoon,” Rob announced, once more-or-less most of the class was present. “I hope you all had a good lunch,” to be fair, lunch had been two hours ago; if he recalled correctly, the students would have had Spellwork immediately before Potions. “So assuming you did - or you didn’t, I’m not your mother - it’s time for dessert!” Rob clapped his hands together, then gestured to the tables.

“In front of you, you have all the ingredients for making some ice cream. But Muggle ice cream is boring, so we’re going to be making magical ice cream.” Rob waved his wand and words appeared on the board (now that spell he’d mastered pretty quickly because writing on the board was a giant pain when you were using a wheelchair).

1.5 oz Bouncing Spider juice
One dozen diced Flabberghasted leeches
Two juiced Crokoa pods
One handful thinly sliced Flitterbloom Root

8oz cream
8oz sugar

“You’re going to put this stuff in the smaller plastic bag with the ingredient of your choice,” Rob wiggled his fingers at them at ‘ingredient of your choice’ and gave the words an entirely unnecessary emphasis. “Which can be something from up here,” Rob gestured at the table, “Or something from your kits. Just try to avoid using anything poisonous, okay?” He paused. “Ask me if you uh have questions about that last bit.” Even the first years should have an understanding of what in their potions kit was poisonous and what wasn’t. “Anyway your ingredient of choice will make cool stuff happen with your ice cream, because Muggle ice cream is boring.” All of the solid ingredients would dissolve with some mixing.

Rob neglected to tell the students what, precisely, extra ingredients might do. The peppermint leaves he had up front would cause the ice cream to turn forest green and sing Christmas carols, while the billywig stings would make the person eating the ice cream levitate and the shrake spine would make interestingly colored smoke pour out of their ears. Other ingredients would do other fun things, of course, and there were no ingredients in their basic potions kit that wouldn’t have at least some effect. It was a practical application of ingredient properties. Or something.

“Once you add everything to the smaller bag, you want to pour rock salt into the bigger bag and cast a freezing charm on it,” Rob had checked with Professor Mc - with Aaron - to make sure they had already learned the charm, “and then put the small bag in the big bag and shake it around until you have ice cream.” It would take a fair amount of shaking, which Rob figured would keep them entertained for the duration of class. “When you’re done, bring it up to me so I can make sure you won’t accidentally poison yourselves and then you can eat it. Cool? Cool. Get started.”

Rob made a shooing motion at the class and they started to move around, preparing to begin their potions lesson. Excellent. Now all he had to do was sit back, relax, and try not to laugh when one of them inevitably made something go horribly wrong.
