Yes, I am surprised
Wed Aug 2, 2017 23:13

Blue eyes blinked at the fuzzy greeting from their professor. Anssi wasn’t sure whether he was being spoken to directly or just as a general member of the cluster of other students he had walked in with, but either way, he returned with a polite “Hej-hej”. The short-ish first-year then ducked his head and continued on down the rows of laboratory tables, skipping over a few open seats in order to claim one at the very front of the room.

Although he had never been a front-row sitter in his school at home, Anssi had quickly figured out that the front row was best at RMI. He wasn’t the best at reading and writing, or at listening and talking, but in the front he had a better chance at being able to slowly re-read anything written on the front boards or just wave over professors for help when he needed it. Front-row sitting was especially important for their Potions class because the man who taught it was in a wheeling chair - not a concept unfamiliar to the boy, but unfamiliar in a classroom setting. Professor Rob’s wheeling chair meant that he was quite low down. Even in the front row, Anssi thought the man didn’t have a very good view of him, since sometimes he waved for help and it took a while to get his attention.

He stared curiously at the items laid out on the laboratory bench, trying to pay attention to what Professor Rob was saying while also trying to figure out how his introduction to the class lined up with what looked like sugar and milk. All the talk of lunch was a little weird, since it felt like hours since Anssi had eaten. And he had already eaten dessert, too - a bowl of cherries and a cookie after he finished his sandwich. That had been a lot of food. Every time he asked his empty plate for a sandwich, it gave him an American-style sandwich, with all the regular fillings but two thick pieces of bread instead of only one. He preferred sandwiches with one piece of bread. So far, all his attempts at asking his plate for one-bread sandwiches hadn’t worked out very well.

Apparently even Professor Rob thought that lunches were big, because he had expected them to only eat not-desserts at lunch and this whole class was about making their own dessert. “I am thinking that I should maybe have not eaten a dessert for lunch,” he sighed to himself. How would he manage to eat ice-cream on top of everything still in his belly? This was a problem. (It was also a problem that he didn’t recognize half of the ice-cream ingredients on the board, but that was a problem he assumed whoever his partner was could take the lead on, whereas the problem of his very full belly was not something anyone else or even he could fix right now.)

The idea of getting to make ice-cream wasn’t at all a problem, though. After spending the last Too Long doing ‘research’ with his fellow first-years, which in his case meant staring intensely at textbook pages as he tried to match enough words to his potions vocabulary list to know what they meant, Anssi was relieved that they would be getting to actually do something today. He heaved his potions textbook off the table and carefully crouched down to set it on the floor underneath.

Once he had made sure the book would be out of his way, he straightened up and looked to the student nearest him. “Sorry, but are you already having a partner for today?” he asked them, a bit hesitantly. He hadn’t yet been involved in potion-making, since they had been doing so much ‘research’, but he already knew that it would be very slow for him and was already feeling guilty about holding his (potential) partner behind everyone else.
