Om nom nom

Now in his second week of classes, Satveer was settling in to the world of RMI. Classes had started, he’d penned a letter for home and had gotten to grips with the majority of the Americanism he had to deal with on a day to day basis.

Satveer was also starting to relax in his appearance. His clothes were still more formal than most (he didn’t have any other less formal clothes), but he had chosen to lose the tie and leave his top button undone. This gave him more of a business-casual look, as his father would say. Whilst he had been sowing the seeds for friendship, Satveer hadn’t yet found a group of friends with whom he regularly hung. This was partially down to his innate tactics of befriend everyone upset no one, but since the blip that was Quodpot, he was purposely flying under the radar trying not to draw too much attention.

Of all the lessons on Satveer’s curriculum, Potions was the only one he felt would be a challenge. It was too much like cooking. No matter how he followed (or deviated from) the recipes, the end result more often than not didn’t come out as intended (although, Satveer admits that’s an over exaggeration in failures). Potions, as far as Satveer could see, would be either an unmitigated disaster or an unbridled success and any middle ground would be seen as a win!

As the doors to the Practical Lab opened, Satveer walked with the other students whilst nonchalantly observing where people naturally sat. In the middle-ish of the room, a girl was just sitting down to a seemingly random table. The girl appeared shorter than average and this soon made Satveer realised he’d seen her about the Lyra common room. Satveer proceeded toward her table and sat down next to her. Once sat, Satveer removed his notebook from his bag. Being the start of the term, Satveer loved flicking through the white pristine pages of his notebook. Come Christmas, these pages would undoubtedly look more like a graphic novel than an academic notebook, but Satveer enjoyed savouring their crispness while it lasted.

Once the lesson had started and Professor Heir had tantalised them with the idea of ice cream, Satveer soon realised that this was worse than potions. This was cooking with potions. More still, this was cooking with potions and ingredients that could poison you. This sustained Satveer’s wonderment at just how an educational institution can equip their students with poisons and killer ingredients, and yet, still operate inside the law. That said, the idea of successfully making ice cream was stimulating and Satveer asserted that if he followed the recipe, it should go fine.

The Lyra girl next to Satveer started gathering an assortment of items from her potions kit and Satveer looked on in awe. It appeared she was more organised than he. As she finished arranging her kit on the table, Satveer realised he was staring so started to fumble in his own kit as to not appear weird.

” Have you decided on what flavour and the special effect you want for your ice-cream?”

Satveer started placing some jars out of his kit bag onto the table “I love white chocolate and strawberries” he smiled. “I have no idea on my effect though. How about you?” he ask inquisitively.

Satveer waited, poised for Sara’s response. "I don’t have any, though. Do you?” The words had but left Sara’s lips when Satveer delved his hand in his bag rummaging for the ingredient. As his hand... more
