Well now I'm embarrassed

Of all the classes he was taking, Connor Farnon was most good at Spellwork and Potions class. He wasn’t a genius in either subject, but he was a solid student and he was happy with himself for that. He usually got E’s on his exams, although never O’s, even though he was sure he spent less time studying than other students. Connor rarely did anything other than bury his nose in a book, but that book wasn’t always a textbook. He liked Muggle historical fiction a lot, and was currently in a middle of a series of books about boys his age in different stages of American history. Since he’d grown up in England - although technically he was half Italian-Americna, from his mother - Connor didn’t know a whole lot about American history, particularly the Muggle type.

Overall, Connor didn’t mind Muggles. He was just confused about how anyone could possibly survive without magic. They must spend so much time doing menial tasks that they could have easily used elsewhere. Why was dishes by hand when a spell or a house-elf could do it? Not that the Farnons had a house-elf, of course; his uncle had inherited the family house-elf when his grandfather had died seven years ago.

Anyway, Connor was pleased to be going to Potions and on his way in, stopped to say hello to Professor Rob. Although Connor should have been miffed by his professor’s specific eschewment of robes, which was against the rules, for some reason Connor never minded when Professor Rob didn’t follow the dress code. Connor, of course, did. Today he was wearing a neatly pressed collared white shirt with a forest-green sweatervest on top, with dark khakis. Over this ensemble he had put on his gray robes, blue Cetus dreamcatcher on the right breast. The robes were still a little bit big, but Connor thought it was always appropriate to wear them.

When Connor got to his seat, he pulled out a notebook and a Self-Inking Quill and began copying down the recipe on the board. He was halfway through the copying when he started getting nervous. He looked around, but most people weren’t taking notes yet like he was. This potion seemed really hard though. Were they really going to be expected to do this in class? Connor spun the ring he wore on his left index finger very nervously before continuing to copy down the recipe.

Professor Rob began class shortly thereafter, leaving Connor scrambling to copy the recipe in neat handwriting before he began his lecture notes. Unfortunately, or fortunately, there didn’t seem to be a lot of lecture today - they were supposed to be back-solving for a solution to the Hiccuping Solution, which Connor was still a little intimidated by. Creative problem-solving was not his strong suit; he could follow directions well, but the Cetus rarely managed much on his own. It made him anxious. And anxiety made him -

Hic.

Embarrassed, Connor looked around to see if his sudden hiccup had disturbed anyone. Instead, he heard another student hiccup. And then two more. Connor was confused. What was going on?

Then Professor Rob explained, and Connor felt his cheeks burn. He was going to be hiccuping all class? How was he supposed to work in those conditions? He had never had an assignment like this before and didn’t even know how to start. Plus, hiccuping always embarrassed him beyond belief. He spun his ring more vigorously before deciding to pull out his potions book to check the purpose of each of the listed ingredients, hiccuping all the while. Connor really didn’t want a partner today. He could do it all by himself.

FIrst, mandrake leaves. Connor read the entry silently. It explained that mandrake leaves were often used to remove toxicity, usually in antidotes. That made no sense to him. “Aren’t we supposed to be working on an antidote?” he muttered, frustrated.
