Room for one more?

Unfortunately, the sixth-years-and-Emmett friend group had been nothing but drama lately. First there was Marissa having sex with Ruben. Holland was over Ruben (and they had not slept with him) but it was still weird, both that one of their friends had been with him and that it was Marissa. They would have totally believed Rose—they were pretty sure Rose had a thing for Ruben, and the two hung out a lot—but Ruben didn’t really seem like Marissa’s type. Then again, Marissa didn’t seem to have just one type, but Ruben’s… personality didn’t mesh with Marissa’s usual bubbly outlook.

Not that Holland really had room to talk there. But that was beside the point.

Besides that, Rose and Emmett were hanging out more and Emmett was being weird and secretive, which Holland felt weird about. It made the suspicious part of their brain light up like red pushpins on a corkboard. And then there was what happened with Danny and Ruben, which, honestly, Holland was just shocked Danny wasn’t dead. Not shocked about why he had hexed Ruben (because, spoiler alert, Danny was a dummy who was still carrying an Olympic-grade torch for Marissa) but shocked that he was more-or-less okay.

So Holland’s plan was to lie low and hang out with Armaan and Kaye and Maverick until all the drama was resolved. They were a little worried about Marissa, and they’d talked to her a bit, but otherwise Holland was giving this mess a wide berth. They had Opinions about everything that was going on, but right now, sharing them wouldn’t help anyone.

They had just traded the baby off to Camilla for the evening and were heading back to Lyra to do some homework before Astronomy when they heard a literal explosion from inside one of the classrooms. They opened the door a little too hard in their haste to make sure it wasn’t an underclassman blowing themself up with a potion, and it banged against the wall. They were surprised (but slightly relieved) to just see Maverick with a large hunk of marble.

Maverick seemed less happy to see them. Holland held up their hands in a gesture of peace. “Just me,” they said. “I heard an explosion so I thought I should make sure Hunter wasn’t blowing up his cauldron or something. Do you know what you’re carving yet, or is it the kind of thing where you have to see where the stone takes you?” They understood that it was like that for some visual artists, although Holland always had the outcome in mind when they were doing makeup or outfit-planning, which was the closest they got to art.

  • Having a blast. - Maverick Buchannan, Sun Aug 20 17:40
“ Reducto! ” Crash . A chunk of marble fell from the block, clattering loudly to the ground. “ Reducto! ” Maverick repeated to the same end. He had levitated the large block here to the lab to work... more

Mave hadn’t consciously pulled his wand on Holland, but he’d been using his wand when he had been startled, and his immediate instinct when surprised was to defend himself, so he supposed it wasn’t... more

Holland liked Maverick, but he was a loner, which they weren’t really used to in a friend. Since second year, their five-person group had been spending just about every spare moment together, so... more
          • I suppose so. - Maverick, Wed Aug 23 18:25
Mave glanced between the block and Holland. He sighed. Holland was so damn positive and, seemingly, so genuinely interested. “It’s like.. Okay, so the idea is that it’s a chest. But like, half is... more
            • Real chatty, aren’t you? - Holland, Thu Aug 24 16:15
“No, I like it,” Holland protested. “If the idea is important to you, then you should make it. Why do you think it’s dumb now?” They weren’t, like, a scholar of art, but it sounded like the kind of... more
