Claudia Dubois [2nd year Cetus]
If I hold my breath 'til I pass out can I leave?
Mon Jan 23, 2017 17:03

Potions was probably (not definitely - as there were other contenders, and Claudia may have to reassess her preferences in her second year at RMI; a few things had altered since her first, including her familiarity with professors and their respective teaching habits - but probably) her least favourite subject at school. The reasons for this included the practical aspects of the class not being within the realm of her skillset - while she could follow the instructions and made a reasonable attempt at the required solution, she did not find it easy or enjoyable - her dislike for having to work in pairs or small groups, which was almost always encouraged in potions, and her intense dislike of the professor. ‘Rob’ was not punctual; he did not follow a predictable syllabus, nor did he embrace usual methods of punishment (not that Claudia had ever been needed admonishment in his class, but his unpredictable and unorthodox methods of enforcing adherence just made her more nervous in his classes).

There was, however, one benefit of potions class, which was that in this class, above all others, Claudia could happily wear a pair of gloves for the majority of the class without arousing any suspicion or, indeed, even drawing any attention to herself. Her fingernails had suffered terribly in the stress brought on by leaving her family and returning to school for the start of the term, and they were only now starting to resemble a normal set of nails. Given the option, the Cetus student would still prefer to conceal them, and so she did, in an especially fine pair of salamander skin gloves, which were fitted to her slim fingers, as well as being flame proof. The second year also liked to wear her uniform robes to potions. In all truthfulness, she liked to wear her uniform robes to all her classes, because she liked to uphold propriety, including adherence to school rules, and because she was consistently concerned that anyone and everyone around her might be judging her on her chosen outfit. It wasn’t that she believed everyone to be judgmental, merely that she believed herself to be more open to ridicule than most. It was an erroneous belief, of which she was aware on a conscious and logical level, but her anxieties ran deeper than she could completely control. Regardless, despite the potential for robes to be hazardous in potions class, Claudia wore them anyway, keeping the sleeves neatly tucked in, and the front completely drawn, concealing entirely the grey tunic dress she wore beneath them. Her dark blonde hair had been braided tightly to her head in one central plait from her hairline to her shoulders, fastened with a simple black elastic. Whilst this style did keep her hair safe during a potions class, this was only a secondary consideration; she did not always tie up her hair, but had decided today to keep it out of the way.

Trying not to appear rude but unwilling to make eye contact with the professor, Claudia entered the lab with the first flurry of students keeping her gaze fixed on her shoes. She chose as inconspicuous a seat as possible and quietly began collecting together her supplies for the lesson. She did notice that the potion outlined on the board seemed especially difficult for a beginner lesson, but she did not begin to suspect that something was awry until and unusually large number of hiccups sounded in a room with a hiccuping solution outlined on the board. Claudia had figured out the aim of the class moments before the professor declared it, and she sighed through her nose in dissatisfaction. She then hiccuped, and sighed again.

It was a logical lesson, not necessarily a difficult one, Claudia considered as she pulled her textbook towards her. She wished she could as easily talk herself into working with a partner, but she couldn’t pretend that she found anything alluring about having to share this class with somebody else. She looked up at the person nearest, was disappointed that it was no Connor, but she offered a small smile, anyway. “Hi,” she said. “Are you content to work together today?”
