Great is who we are

Connor proposed starting with the shapes and then moving on to size and colour. Nodding along, her brain caught up a second later and she realized -- “Oh, of course, that totally makes sense!” She’d been thinking of starting with the size, but in retrospect it would be easier to do shapes first. Changing the shape would sort of naturally change the size, she assumed, since for example, little edges would have to be stretched out to make the corners for a square, which meant they would probably have had to fix the size again too anyways. “You’re so smart!” she added enthusiastically before blushing. Oops, was that a compliment? Did that mean it counted as… flirting?

The only thing Marley knew about flirting was that there weren’t any rules to it, and that wasn’t a very useful thing to know, but oh well. Her mum and dad flirted sometimes, both with each other and with other people, but it always looked different. Sometimes they would tease or joke, sometimes they got all touchy and make Marley pretend to gag (even though she would still peek through her fingers a little, just like she did when kissing scenes came on the TV), and sometimes she couldn’t even tell if they were flirting or just fighting because they would yell but not in quite the same yelling-voice used when Bludger ripped a hole through the newspaper or when Marley broke a plate because she was trying to carry too many at once. In movies, flirting was a bit clearer to identify since a lot of movies did basically the same things even when they had totally different actors or even a different genre. But real life wasn’t movies, and real life had no rules to flirting, and oh my God that meant she had flirted with Connor, right?

The kinky-haired girl was so distracted in her own brain that she nodded along agreeably when Connor said they weren’t supposed to be racing. “Yeah, okay.” It took her a moment to figure out what the words were that had come out of her mouth. What had she just agreed to? Eh, it couldn’t be that important. “I’ll start with the triangle!” she volunteered brightly, separating a bean from the pile and lining it up in front of her. “Triangles might seem basic but they’re the strongest shapes, did you know that? All of the weight lands on the point and then, like, rolls down the sides, and the angles help it keep stable. Triangles are used in a lot of Muggle buildings.” She grinned at him, pleased to introduce him to the brilliance of Muggle architecture. Sometimes she worried that Connor still thought Muggles weren’t as good as wizards and witches, but she thought she had done a really great job showing Claudia the truth about how amazing the Muggle world was, and slowly she was helping Connor with that too.

Drawing her willow wand, Marley poked the bean with it and declared “Mutare!” The bean seemed to hesitate, and she giggled. “Don’t worry, bean. Mutare!” Focusing really super hard on triangles, until she was pretty sure her brain was gonna turn into a triangle too, she was delighted to watch as the bean twisted over itself and flattened out into a skinny triangle. Maybe still a bit too skinny to fit the puzzle board, but it was an awesome start. “Yesss! Okay, your turn!” She sat as patiently as she could, but she was still thinking about flirting and how do people flirt anyways, and it seemed like Connor had only barely started on his bean when suddenly she remember a thing her dad did sometimes when he was flirting with women who weren’t her mum (because her mum would just punch him for it, but Marley was pretty sure Connor wouldn’t punch her, because she was a girl and a Beater too). So without waiting any longer, heartbeat skipping, she reached over to push his hair behind his ear. It wouldn’t work as well as it could’ve, since he had short hair and it was already pretty neat and so her hand kind of automatically flattened as if to pat his hair instead of angling to push it, but she had made up her mind to do it and now she was gonna.
