Okay, and Sara did not want to work on the assignment, because she was all “I’ll do it later,” which was fine except that the class was only so long. Like, she’d eventually have to do it. In the next hour-ish. Drew was pretty sure he could get away with more than average in this class because he was pretty sure Aaron wouldn’t want to get Drew in trouble (unlike Dad, who would totally get Drew in trouble if he caught him doing anything), but Drew liked Spellwork and he wanted to do the spells. Also Aaron’s surprises were usually cool and sometimes candy so Drew wanted to finish the assignment and get whatever the thing that would happen was.

It wasn’t like they were goofing off, though. They were having an interesting conversation about the Houses, which was the kind of thing that Drew was totally game for. For good measure, Drew did another color-changing charm while he was thinking about his answer to Sara’s question. He turned the bean a really bright cartoon-acid green color and put it aside, next to the red one from earlier. They only had a few more to go and then if Sara ever did the shapes they could start doing the spells for size.

He ticked off the Houses on his fingers as he listed them. “Well, it’s just, I play guitar, and piano a little, and I’m pretty good at singing,” not bragging, just telling the truth, “but I’m not super artsy and I don’t like the spotlight that much, so that disqualifies me for Lyra. Draco has a big thing about learning and family. I’m not really bookish, and I mean, I love my family but they’re not more a part of my life than for most people.” Okay that might actually not be true, because he was around his family like, way more than most RMI students, and his cousin was his best friend, but still. Drew thought Madeleine would make a great Draco when she came to RMI in four years. She always wanted to know why things were the way that they were, and she was kind of dorky and liked doing all their family traditions. She was like Dad that way.

“Aquila is for like, pranksters and rebels and stuff, and I usually like, follow rules. Don’t get me wrong, I like a good prank, I’m not a goody-two-shoes, but I’m not gonna like, go out of my way to break rules.” Sure, if the opportunity presented itself and it was convenient for Drew, he wasn’t going to let a rule stop him if he thought it was a dumb rule, but he got the idea that some Aquilas broke rules just for the sake of doing it.

Like Ruben. He was kind of cool but in the most jerk-ish way possible. He’d beat people up for no reason last year. And according to Alice Lemont, who had heard it from her sister Kateri, who had heard it from Heather Bartel, who knew, like, everything, something had gone down with him and Marissa, so Drew extra disliked him on principle.

“So I don’t really fit the other Houses. I guess maybe I have the peacekeeping thing for Cetus? I just think fighting is kind of dumb most of the time. It’s a waste of effort.” You weren’t going to change someone’s mind about anything by arguing with them; they’d just dig their heels in more and be stubborn about it. Drew would totally fight with someone if they deserved it, but his threshold for deserving it was a lot higher than it seemed to be for most people. “Maybe that’s why. I dunno. So why do you think you’re a Lyra, then?” he asked, realizing Sara hadn’t really answered his original question.

The Lyra had not put too much thought into the RMI houses before Drew had brought it up. He began describing each one of them, and Sara was enthralled by it. The second-year began thinking about... more
