Marley Chapman
Sometimes everything is just weird, you know?
Sun Dec 10, 2017 23:47

Something had seemed wrong when Marley woke up this morning. Not, like, bad-wrong. Just weird-wrong. She’d expected that it might be one of those normal temporary morning weirdnesses, like when you slept in an awkward position overnight and then it took a while going about the day before your hand and fingers remembered how to hold stuff, or like when you had to sleep with your mouth open because you had a cold and couldn’t breathe through your nose but then it felt like there were cobwebs growing in around your teeth, or like when you were trying to stay up studying but instead wound up using your pile of textbooks as a pointy pillow and it took basically hours for the dents to come out of your face. So she had rolled out of bed like normal and starting poking through the closet to pick an outfit.

However, she had turned back around and discovered the reddish splotch on her bed. And oh no, her mum had explained this to her and warned her it should start happening soon, but she was barely fourteen! This was too soon. It had to be. There was no way she was gonna have to put up with her ‘transmission falling out’ (her mum’s phrase of choice) or ‘the communist invasion’ (also courtesy of her mum) or ‘Hockey Night in Canada’ slash ‘Murder on the Ice” (those came from her dad) literally every single month from now until she died or got old enough to be basically dead or whatever. Marley was a little unclear on how the ending part went. But she had been well-educated on what to expect for the starting part, so she wasn’t freaking out… much.

Yes, she’d woken up Alice to vent her concerns that this was too soon and how come she hadn’t gotten any hints that this was gonna happen and did that mean something was wrong. But, once her roommate had blinked wider awake and figured out what she was talking about, Alice had offered up some stories about her sister and even suggested they go find Kateri for breakfast. That had all been very reassuring. Didn’t help much once Marley was explaining it all, blushing as dark as her ruined sheets, to the house-elf that had helpfully popped up at her cry of “But how do I clean this??”. Also didn’t help much with her struggle understanding the box of Muggle supplies her mum had packed her - not that her mum hadn’t explained it when she was packing it up originally, but Marley hadn’t been paying enough attention, and she only realized it now. Still, in some ways, Alice helped her feel less alarmed about the situation.

Talking about it over breakfast with Kateri hadn’t been nearly as awkward as Marley had expected. Not that it wasn’t awkward at all, and she definitely found her voice turning quieter than usual. But luckily, the older girl was super nice. Marley could tell immediately that she found it funny, because of how her eyes twisted on her cheeks, but she didn’t laugh at her once, and that was a relief since being laughed at would have made her feel worse for sure. Instead, she left their chat feeling like she could say she had handled the whole communist-hockey-murder-thing well. She had been caught by surprise, but according to Kat, that was totally normal and not a sign of something being wrong, and she had gotten flustered as a result, which was also totally normal, but overall she had still kept her head on.

Well, mostly. As the day went on, Marley caught herself thinking about It a lot. Because it was just weird, okay? Sure, it was ~natural~ or whatever, but it was something that happened so that women could make babies and that was dumb since she was still a kid, so what did it matter? And some of the Muggle supplies she had hastily dumped out on the bathroom counter and rooted through had been even weirder than the concept itself. The pad she’d wound up using was the simplest option, but it was thick enough that it felt like a folded-up magazine down there. Maybe it hadn’t been the best decision to wear tighter-fitting jean shorts today… Although, these were old shorts she didn’t care about (unlike her bed), and seemed safer than the skirt she had originally planned on.

Marley and Alice went to Potions together, but because they were talking the whole way, they walked slower than usual and entered the room a little after Mister Rob did. Walking a bit stiffly across the lab, self-conscious but unsure what to do about it because that had rarely ever happened to her before, Marley gave her roomie a grin and shrug as they split up to find open seats. She hung her bookbag over the chair back and sat down, wiggling to find a comfortable(ish) position. Hopefully they would have some big potion to focus on today and get her mind off… things.

Mister Rob’s announcement that they would be making Confusing Concoctions was met with a sigh from the dark-skinned girl. Making a potion that they had already done before wasn’t what she wanted or needed right now. Oh, well, she would just have to make do, and hope that her partner would be enough of a distraction.

Leaning on her elbows, Marley tapped the shoulder of the student seated in front of her. “Hey! Let’s be partners? I’ll go get the sneezewort,” she announced, already standing up. She bounced (a bit stiffly) over to it, exchanged a typically enthusiastic greeting with Kit and Claudia and a couple other friends as they passed each other (because everything was okay with her and no-one knew otherwise), and returned to her seat. “There, nice and fresh.” Marley plopped her handful of leaves on the lab bench in front of her new partner and then darted quickly (still a bit stiffly) around them in order to drag her chair over. Her stomach made a loud grumble just as she sat back down, and she giggled, apologizing automatically. (It was worth noting that the stomach grumble took her attention both away from her murder-hockey-pants and from the Kit-induced chaos on the other side of the room.) “Sorry, I guess I didn’t have enough to eat earlier.” Admittedly, her stomach was often grumpy these days. Most of her meals since the Yogurt Incident had involved peanut-butter sandwiches, since those had the least chance of sad cows and chickens and other animals being involved. “I’ve always loved peanut-butter, but maybe there’s such thing as ‘too much’.”
