Claudia Dubois
I loathe this class

It seemed as though Professor Hier had let his teaching standards drop a little lately, which was a surprise, as Claudia hadn’t given much credit to his teaching standards in the first place, but also monumentally unfair, because the third years, such as herself, had important examinations looming ever closer on the figurative horizon. When she realised they were merely repeating a previously learned potion, Claudia would confess to feeling aggravated. Admittedly it was a good study for her STOATS, but she might have preferred her practical class to be some new experience; after all she could always go over her old notes to revise previously brewed concoctions. Substituting one ingredient for its fresh counterpart was a poor compromise on a new potion, but Claudia had little room for argument. Even though by and large she thought the potion professor’s teaching methods were unsatisfactory, she had never yet complained, and didn’t believe she would ever have the audacity.

Great Merlin, he had to go and make things even worse by utter the repellant phrase ‘pair up’. Claudia would always choose to work on her own if given the opportunity to do so, particularly in potions, when the wrong partner could very possibly singe her eyebrows off, or commit some other heinous crime, but she had never yet disobeyed a direct order to work with a partner. With a severely disgruntled air and a heavy sigh to accompany it, Claudia began taking her tools and other ingredients from her potions kit before she even considered the eventuality of soliciting an accomplice for the duration of the class.

Deciding that she might as well collect her fresh ingredient before everyone else had - either by luck or judgement - already selected the best specimens, Claudia elected to scoot around the edge of the classroom, paying very little attention to her peers, and taking care to wrap her uniform robes tightly around her, so as not to cause incident with an unguarded sleeve or hem. There seemed to be ongoing discussion between students in the beginner years whether it was more sensible to attend a potions class with a robe on, where the flowing fabric might ignite, or cause a trip or spillage, or be the source of any number of other hindrances, or to lose the robe and expose one’s own, personal attire - not to mention any extra square inch of skin - to the potioneering mishaps of the first (and second) years. Claudia elected to wear robes, and keep her blush pink, stretched silk dress, with pearl buttons centrally down its front, covered, hence protected (she would hope), from disaster. Her dark blonde hair was always properly secured in this class (today it was tightly French braided) for the same reason.

Having selected her sneezewort, Claudia carefully took it back towards her desk, whereupon she may or may not find a partner waiting for her. However she was forced to circumvent an incident, which involved the professor lecturing one of the more accident-prone first years, and ended up having to wend her way back through schools in a more direct but less easily navigated route. She found herself muttering about how frustrating it was having to work with incompetent younger students all the time, which was only surprising because she usually had the grace to keep these frequently occuring thoughts to herself, rather than allowing them to spill from her mouth, however inaudibly.

Finally arriving back at her workstation, the third year deposited her final ingredient and was not at all surprised to find there was, in fact, another student there. “That Katherine Kendrick is an unmitigated disaster,” she began, again, quite surprisingly, because voicing aloud her thoughts and opinions of other students was not something of which she made regular habit. “I sincerely hope you prove to be more competent because I am not at all in humor to sacrifice my grade out of obligation.” As she heard herself saying the words, Claudia’s cheeks turned pink and her mind, mercifully, went blank.
