What am I saying?!

Clayton was finally starting to settle into his daily routine. It had taken him almost an entire year, but he was finally figuring out how to do everything on his own without his parents. While he had found it easy to remember to do his homework, he was still struggling to socialize properly and make it to all of his classes on time, all while eating full meals. He found more often than not he would lose himself in the books and shelves in the library, caught in an endless cycle of knowledge that would consume hours and hours of his time. And, every time he managed to stop himself he would check his watch to find out he’d missed meals and a few times even classes.

When he’d gone home for midterm, his mother was especially unhappy to hear how poorly he was eating, but he had assured her he was eating enough to keep him alive and that was all that mattered. She shook her head and instead of protesting further had sent him back with supplements to take to ensure he was getting all the proper vitamins. But, as he walked out the door of his room, he took one last look behind him at the full, unopened bottle still sitting on his dresser. “Maybe I’ll take one when I get back from lunch,” he thought to himself.

As the first year approached the classroom he gave himself a mental pat on the back for not only remembering to show up to class early, but also for having remembered to bring all of his necessities for class, including his Potions kit, which he was apt to forget. But, upon learning from the Professor that the ingredients they would need would not be found in his kit, Clayton’s shoulder sunk. “Of course on the day I remember to bring it, I don’t need it,” he sighed.

Clayton listened intently to the rest of the professor’s words, jotting down the necessary ingredients to make the potion so that he could return to it later. He didn’t want to be caught off guard by a question on an exam if it was being specifically brought to his attention. But, when the time came to gather ingredients, the eleven year-old stayed back for a second, not eager to rush into the mass of other students around the shelf.

While he had only missed three classes the entire year, he was still having trouble making friends at RMI. He attributed it to his lack of enthusiasm outside of learning and Quidditch. He found that not a lot of people spent time in the library like he did. So, he figured that while he was holed up in his favorite section learning about the history of magic, everyone else was making friends around the rest of the school. Without him.

As the rest of the class began to dissipate, he wandered over the shelf to grab his necessary ingredients, thankful to not have been shoved around by anyone else. He made his way back to his seat begrudgingly as he watched the rest of the class pair off. “Another class, working alone,” he thought. Or at least, he thought he thought. “Did I just say that out loud?” Clayton spoke covering his mouth, shamed at having his lonely thoughts exposed.
