As long as I'm quicker than you

“I could stop you from jumping by using a body-bind curse, or I could see if I can freeze you like an icicle.”

“Jump, jump, jump, spin!” Exclaimed Hunter excitedly as he did a one-eighty to turn back towards Dade.

“Probably against all the other things in the book, I’d imagine. But both of those would be silly. To stop someone jumping I think the stickfast hex would be the obvious choice, right? I mean they’d just be like ‘jump, jump, jump’,” which Hunter proceeded to illustrate by jumping some more, “and then just all of a sudden sqrlch and then it’d be just like… ‘stretch, stretch, stretch,” which he then illustrated by making jumping motions without the actual jumping bit.

“I’m just kidding. No I’m not just kidding, I’m just saying that so you won’t tell on me.”

Hunter made a puzzled face. “Why would I tell on you? We’re just talking about spells, right? Or did you mean you wanted to actually freeze me? I still don’t see why I would want to tell on you. Unless you meant it in a mean way? That wouldn’t have been very nice, would it? Of course it didn’t seem like something mean, but then why would you be afraid of getting told on? Maybe you’re just bad at being mean to people? You don’t seem like you’re very good at being mean to people. You haven’t been trying to be mean to people this whole time, have you? I wonder if you can take lessons for being mean to people. I don’t think I’m very good at it either, maybe I should take the lessons with you?”

The line moved forward a bit, and Hunter moved forward with it. Dade said something about concentrating on leaves and then said he hadn’t said it, but Hunter was pretty sure he had. “Yes you did,” he responded. “At least, I’m pretty sure. And they don’t actually require all that much concentration. They’re leaves.”

“Merlin bless, why do I keep saying things? Is this your fault?”

Hunter blinked. “Because that’s how people talk to each other? No? It’s definitely not my fault that you’re a person. If you want to not be I’m pretty sure you’re going to have to try harder. You’re very strange, I think. It certainly makes talking to you very interesting, even if it is confusing a lot of the time.”

Hunter turned back to look at the line in front of them, then turned back to Dade. “The volume of conversation has been getting slowly louder, did you notice?” He turned back again to look at the line, which was starting to move a lot faster, now. He turned back to Dade again. “Also the line is pretty suddenly moving faster and I think everyone else is noticing that people are talking a lot. Are people talking a lot? I hadn’t noticed. You did though! How did you do that?”

The last person in front of Hunter scurried away, and Hunter could finally get a good look at the contents of the cabinet. “Oh! They’re tied together in little bundles, how helpful! They look just like the sneezewort that I put back into my potions kit after taking it out before I knew we’d be needing fresh stuff, except less dry. So it probably is the right thing after all. That’s good.” Hunter picked a bundle up and inspected it closely. “I wonder what makes some leaves better than others? They all look pretty much the same, to me.”

He turned around to Dade again and held the little bundle of sneezewort out for him to see. “What do you think?”

What in Merlin’s name was wrong with Hunter? It wasn’t like this was the first time Dade had interacted with Hunter, because Hunter was in his year. The kid was like Kit, except actually more... more
