Professor Cindra Embers
Face Your Fears (Years 3-7)
Mon Apr 23, 2018 09:21

Someone, at some point this term, had shown Cindra Embers something magical. She’d had no idea that Defense Against the Dark Arts had an actual curriculum! It laid out everything that her students, years one through seven, should be doing and when they should be doing it. There were even parts of this curriculum that aligned the coursework to the textbook and suggested assignments that students should independently complete at home - erm, at school. Could it really be called homework if they never went home to complete it? Dorm work didn’t have the same ring to it, and Common work wasn’t much better. Homework it was.

Anyway, the blonde woman was so excited to have the insider’s scoop on what her classroom was meant to look, sound, and feel like. More professors needed to know about this! It would make their lives so much easier.

This week, however, she decided to make a small change. It was set in stone for her third years to interact with a certain dark creature, according to the almighty curriculum, but none of the other years were to join. In fact, they weren’t supposed to deal with it at all, despite the creature being more than likely to appear on all defense exams - written and practical - in their future.

That just would not do.

She made sure that all students in years three through seven knew to come to class that day. Announcements that sparkled were placed on all the boards to let them know, and she even managed to find all of her seventh years to tell them in person! The seventh years were currently working on independent research projects and only came to class for office hours if needed between now and their presentation days. Since she didn’t see most of them every week, she definitely went out of her way to tell them they had class.

When the students arrived, they found Professor Embers sitting criss cross on top of a large storage chest. Every so often it rattled under her, but the woman with nearly impossibly large blue eyes either didn’t notice or wasn’t bothered. She smiled brightly and greeted each student by name as they sat on the ground. There weren’t any chairs out that day, and she wasn’t completely sure where they were anyway.

“Boggarts!” As her voice chirped, the chalkboard floated around the classroom, weaving between students, as if it had a mind of its own. It wrote out the word “Boggart” in pretty, flowy script, and it did the same with the spell riddikulus. She called on a few of the older students to give some facts about the creature, about the spell, and when she was satisfied that they’d covered enough of the background information, she continued.

“I am aware that most of you have faced boggarts before, so you may feel like this is a waste of time,” she acknowledged, “but I can pretty much guarantee that you older students will face a boggart on your practicals and will have to write about them on your written. Today, you’re going to practice taking down a boggart, and my younger years will also get to do this for the first time!” She clapped her hands excitedly, and the chest beneath her gave a very ominous rattle. “Be careful, my friends. You never know if your biggest fear has changed.”

She moved off of the chest and to the side of the room, ready to intervene if needed. Cindra sat down, smoothing out her long tye dye skirt (and the colors on the fabric magically swirled together), and smiled encouragingly at the first student brave enough to tackle the challenge that was a boggart.
