Ruben Lundqvist
But let's drag it out instead

The only reason Ruben had continued on in taking Defense Against the Dark Arts in past years was because Ivy Rasnick was both hot and capable of skimming over the defense bit in the class's name, at least when it suited her. Discovering that she'd left, then, had been a disappointment, but not by nearly so much as the discovery of who the new (completely unsuitable) 'professor' was. Which in turn was not nearly as unfortunate as the disappointment-bordering-on-rage he'd felt when finding out that yes, they would be doing independent study for the second half of term, and yes, that meant no classes, and yes, that was only for the second half of term and they still had to come to regular classes until then. What a waste. At least Rose had gotten over her issues enough to participate in a mocking back-and-forth during the classes that were theoretically teaching them about the Dark Arts.

In line with his resentment of DADA, and in particular DADA under the wimpiest Cinderella, Ruben had decided to focus his independent study on all of her failings as an instructor and why the class itself was better off structured as DA, no defense required. (He might have to tweak the wording a bit when Presentation Day came. Or he might not. What where they gonna do? Hold him back a year? As if.) Aside from the obvious benefits of this, he could basically write it in his sleep, and so did his own work in his newly freed-up time. Some of this was prep for his little fight club - really one of the only good things left at RMI, after Dueling Club had gone down the loo and Danny had warned him away from dueling his moronic sister anyways. (Although he still took every opportunity to Loom over her. He was good at Looming, and Claudia had been good at fainting that one time, so he was gunning for a repeat.)

The rest of that time, or most of it, as long as Kaye wasn't available to offer a more fun distraction, he spent doing research for himself. Ruben had picked up some fascinating books over the holiday, including a historical account and biography of a Norwegian necrophysicist from the eighteen-hundreds. He wasn't taking Magical Sciences, and didn't really give a damn about the physics of broom flight or whatever, but necrophysics, he could get behind. Unfortunately there weren't any living masters of the art today. Or so the book claimed...

It should therefore come as no surprise that the Swede bounced right back to disappointment-bordering-on-rage when Cindrabella interrupted his reading, book thoroughly disguised as a runic dictionary, to inform him of this mandatory class.

Ruben wouldn't deny that there was some practicality to facing a Boggart. It was basically a way to practice spellcasting in the face of danger without actually being in danger. However, he also wouldn't deny - would vehemently assert, in fact - that it was a coward's way out. Durmstrang's Dark Arts professor hadn't bothered with it, instead opting for much more realistic, genuinely limb- or life-threatening scenarios, and he'd come out just fine. Better than fine. There was a reason why Ruben could guarantee himself the strongest caster at RMI, and it wasn't because of boggarts.

Watching with disinterest as Danny marched himself up to the front of the line like the good role model he was, Ruben experienced a brief second of surprise at the sudden appearance of another Holland, followed by admiration for how foxy this older Holland looked, followed by a snort of laughter as he put the pieces together. Being rejected for who he was by the person he was dating was Danny's biggest fear? He almost would have thought it a joke, possibly that Cindy had been scammed with a bogus Boggart, except Danny was making redundant comments about wanting to shut it up and kept looking at the real Holland, and in general was acting like he was afraid. Well, that was lame. So much for the other man being near(ish) his own level.

He offered a sarcastic slow clap as Danny left the now-tentacled, still-foxy Boggart behind. "Bravo. That was great," he mock-complimented, voice deadpan despite the obvious smirk across his cheeks. "Could've fought anything you wanted, but instead you put Holland into pyjamas. Can we get a gold star for my friend over here?" The direction of Ruben's request was intentionally vague. He proceeded to silently Transfigure a coin in his jeans pocket, and withdrew it to present to Danny with an ironic little hand-flourish: a gold star-shaped pin. Abe Lincoln's face was still visible, and upon noticing this, Ruben focused a moment longer until the metal head stuck out its tongue. "For you. Bravo," he repeated.
