Ruben experienced a mild but undeniable surge of relief at the denial. (In addition to this came a less mild and absolutely not necessary to deny surge of humour at the mental image of Emmett in onesie pyjamas. The kid’s brain was so underdeveloped, he probably needed two other people in the room in order to wrangle himself in and out of such a contraption. Despite his comparably abrasive voice and disproportionate limbs, Emmett couldn’t be the agilest gibbon in the jungle Ruben assumed the Lyra boy’s dorm resembled.) It may or may not have been truthful, however, and so he returned Danny’s backtracking with a non-verbal piece of body language. Part shrug, moderately smirking, all whatever-you-say. It wasn’t his business, except it was.

But not right now. Right now, it was time to laugh at Small Bludgered Danny. Laughing at Danny in general was an activity Ruben found no small satisfaction in, regardless of how bothered by it Danny appeared to be. The other seventh-year was rolling with this current round of mockery, almost looking amused at it himself, and this didn’t impact the amusement he was taking from it. He’d been skimmed by a few Bludgers in his earlier days on the Aquila team, but not enough to break bone. Although he had gotten multiple bones broken over the years in other ways. If asked, he’d express his opinion that one got used to it over time; if being honest, he’d acknowledge that it was more like the departure of pain and absence of injury just got easier to fake.

“Knowing your fears, and laughing at them, makes them easier to overcome.”

His eyes rolled again at the basically word-for-word recitation of ‘Defense Against’ propaganda. “Sure, but it is not true, not easier,” the blonde countered dismissively. “It’s only a mind-game that a Boggart takes out of your head. If you have some big fear like this--” Ruben’s gesture at the front of the room was meant to encompass the class overall, except he was unable to hold back a snort at the ironic sight of Buck the snuskhummer both shrinking and trying to maintain a self-righteous pose in front of his Boggart, which was a woman criticizing him because of course it was, “--it does not matter how many times a Boggart tricks you to think that you can laugh at it, because it is always in your head, and you will always be talking yourself away instead of coming over it.”

Looking for something funny in fear might have a fraction of something resembling benefit, he would concede, but the type of funny that a Boggart required wasn’t at all legitimate. From his observations so far of their classmates, Danny included, all a Boggart did was stir up panic and force them to do something they pretended was funny in order to make it go away. And so all that a lesson like this could teach was reactivity rather than actual intelligent solutions. Take Buckley again, for example. For whatever reason, he’d decided that the funniest route was to make his Boggart strip and set her clothes on fire. There were a lot of problems with that, but most importantly, how the hell was that supposed to help him overcome his fears in the real world? Not like he could just Imperius all feminists to go topless. (And if that was the lesson learned here, well then Cinabuns was pineappling her job as ‘Defense Against’ teacher even worse than he’d thought.)

Danny glanced towards Holland and, involuntarily, Ruben’s gaze followed. They were at the front of the line now, which was annoyingly fitting, considering the depressing tangent the brunette beside him had wandered down. He shook his head slightly at the question with a quieter snort. “Those are the ones not worth worrying about. You cannot do anything to stop it, so why be scared?” Waste of energy, in his opinion. Also-- “Fan, did you plan that?” he quizzed at the appearance of a second Danny. Rhetorically, because who planned fears, but also skeptically, because who had matching fears? The only thing that could make this any stranger was if Holland also took the onesie route… Or the animagus route. That worked too. He frowned thoughtfully at the newly riddikulus’d rabbit.
