I thought he had, already?

Marley opted to start making the potion, and Claudia nodded her agreement. “Help yourself to my kit if you need anything,” she nudged the leather bag on the floor with her foot to indicate which was hers (although its proximity to her, as well as the fact that CLAUDIA DUBOIS was embossed in gold near the clasp, almost certainly rendered this action superfluous). Then she pushed back her hair (another unnecessary action, considering its tight braid at the current moment, but one born of habit), and looked again to her textbook, taking neat notes as she deemed necessary.

Problem solving was not necessarily something that the Cetus enjoyed, but she did have a knack for it. Looking up relevant potions ingredients and their effects was more time consuming than simply knowing the correct answer, but at least she would be lead to the correct answer in time. She could be logical when she needed to be. It wasn’t a trait that she could declare applied to her as a person - she was wearing gloves without touching ingredients, she was wearing robes near an open flame, and she was working a little slower than she might if she were not being constantly plagued by concerns that Marley would think Claudia boring, or bossy, or too smart, or not smart enough, to name just a few of the present illogicalities of her disposition - but she could employ logic when necessary. As was demonstrated several minutes later when she felt she had reached a sensible conclusion.

“How’re you doing?” her partner checked in at an auspicious moment. Claudia glanced up to see that the brewing had begun satisfactorily, and she nodded again to convey positivity.

“I think I have something,” she replied around a hiccup. “If we add salamander blood once we remove the shrivelfig I think that should - hic -be sufficient to cause the potion to entirely cure the hiccups, rather than just quieting them.” She turned her notes a little so Marley could read over them if she wanted; Claudia would definitely check another students’ working before adding an unconfirmed ingredient to a stipulated potion, so she would not be in the least offended.

In theory her part of the assignment was now complete, according to their recent agreement about splitting the workload, but it seemed unfair for her to simply sit back and watch while Marley did all the rest of the work for the class. More importantly, she did not want the professor to think she was slacking; she did not want to discover what he would do in retaliation. “Is there anything I can do to help?” she asked. “I don’t like brewing very much,” she may as well be honest, “but I haven’t messed anything up too badly yet.” That was modest; all her potions to date had been average but passable, and she had yet to make anything combust, explode, melt, congeal, or otherwise fail.

  • Then let's get to work - Marley, Fri Jan 27 16:06
It seemed her question was unnecessary, as Claudia had already started rifling through her textbook before she’d even finished talking. “ Hic! Wow, you’re fast!” That was pretty impressive to Marley. ... more

      • Well, now it's official! - Marley, Sat Jan 28 16:56
Marley blinked at the black seeds on the counter. Oh, wait. She’d accidentally pulled out a bottle of sunflower seeds instead of dill. Presumably because her stomach had made a little growl, and... more
        • *waves official flag* - Claudia, Wed Feb 1 05:07
Claudia felt bolstered that Marley seemed to agree with her reasoning for salamander blood. She was so pleased with their progresses, in fact, she even consented to skin the shrivelfig. “Yes, okay,”... more
