Dardanius Dubois
A first and a last
Mon Jun 11, 2018 10:06

His time at Rocky Mountain International was almost up. The term was winding down to its end with predictable markers - Quidditch championship, musical production, examinations - denoting how little time Danny had left to enjoy being a student here. He’d always thought that he’d be so excited to graduate, to leave school and experience whatever was waiting for him afterwards, but he hadn’t expected to have so much fun these past seven years; neither was he expecting transition from the safe and predictable confines of this institution to the unpredictable reality outside its walls would be easy to navigate with his particular circumstances. Things with Claudia had now gotten so bad that the Counselor had contacted their parents, which Danny knew would only make it harder (if not impossible) for them to accept Holland. At least he had an internship lined up for the summer, and then a trip to Paris with his family that was going to be excruciating to endure, and then he would start working shortly after he returned home. Unfortunately, while this would keep Dardanius out of the house (away from his parents and from Claudia), deciding not to attend college meant he would probably continue to live at home. It wasn’t an ideal scenario, but he couldn’t exactly just move out: he had never lived without a house elf. He had cooked precisely one meal in his life. The idea was laughable.

Back to the present, Danny was trying to enjoy every last second he still had at RMI. He didn’t know Myfanwy very well (he’d given up on trying to befriend the transfers after his wasted efforts with Russell and then Ruben) but she was cheerful and approachable and friends with Holland (and a little unusual, but weren’t they all?). Her recycling fair wasn’t something Danny was very interested in, but neither was he completely uninterested. He hadn’t given any thought to where his food came from prior to Myffi’s Diner exploits (all his food was served to him; he had never been grocery shopping) or to where his garbage went before today. When something broke, Danny didn’t bother to fix it, he just bought a replacement. The sixth year’s presentation was too heavy-handed for Danny’s tastes, but he understood and accepted the points she was trying to convey.

Danny was taking a preliminary scope of the room, wondering whether it would be cheating to use a locomotor spell on his paper airplane, and whether Ruben or Kit would be more likely to crush the most cans (what Ruben had in strength, Kit made up for in unrelenting enthusiasm), and halted briefly at a table adorned with pamphlets. He reached for one - that suggested alternatives to plastic bottles and containers, like the ones his shampoo and his body wash came packaged in - but he withdrew his hand as someone else reached for something at the same time. “After you,” he offered.
