A little chit-chat is in order

“You haven’t given my sister a ring yet,” Kit said matter-of-factly, coming up to Myffi after the older girl had finished talking about the environment. Kit had listened - well as much as Kit ever listened to something that wasn’t animated and took longer than a minute and a half - but it had mostly been boring and besides, the important part was that she come talk to Myffi because it had been like a total long time since Kit found out that Myffi and Marissa were together and she was maybe a little bit offended because Myffi hadn’t once asked Kit if she wanted to have ice cream together or watch Disney movies on the magicked TV that Professor Blair had (Kit wasn’t sure if she was actually allowed to use the TV, Shifty helped her sneakity-sneak around sometimes; Shifty’s favourite film was The Aristocats and Kit’s was obviously Lilo and Stitch, but because SOMEONE hadn’t even asked to come watch, Kit didn’t know which one was Myffi’s favorite). “And I haven’t decided what experiment you are yet either.”

Those were important things. There were other important things too, like Kit really wanted to try the can-crushing contest because she was good at crushing things and can-crushing sounded like fun and besides, maybe she could get Ruben to play. Kit had lost track of Drew like .2 seconds after they got to the event because she’d gotten distracted, and Dade was being a scaredy-cat boring-pants all the time now, since he’d almost set Claudia on fire, and Remington was maybe here but Kit hadn’t seen her yet. But she was pretty sure that Ruben was going to go because Ruben was friends with Myffi and Kit wanted to challenge him to an epic can-smashing SHOWDOWN where there would be lots of great grumbly music like when monster trucks happened. She thought monster trucks were really neat, but nobody in her family was into them and because she was the littlest she got the last turn at picking what to watch on TV, usually.

Aside from the can-crushing, Kit has made a beautiful sculpture made out of trash Marissa had picked up on her way to and from dance on Pearl Street. It was great. It was a little plastic person, all made out of discarded bottles and bits of things. Some stuff Kit hadn’t been able to use because there had been gross stuff or food on it, but she had managed to put together an entire little doll-like thing using the bottles, clothing it with a patchwork, sleeveless dress of paper scraps with a cute little cap on its head that was black and gold. The word “Jon” was visible on the brim of the hat, which Kit had made out of a little square package with a rubber circle inside that had been wedged between a water bottle’s label and the bottle itself. Although it wasn’t quite the point of the project, Kit couldn’t figure out what to do with the rubber thing so she’d covered in in fabric and made it into a nightcap for Darby, then folded the packaging into a hat.

The doll, named Jon after its hat, was in Kit’s arms as she looked up at Myffi, anticipating a response.
