That's the point of this class

“Memories in general don’t seem to be the most reliable source of information when it comes to facts,” Remington whispered back. Claudia sucked on her upper lip while she considered that. It was true; sometimes a person witnessed a scene that could be interpreted in numerous ways. Shadow could trick the eyes, fear or paranoia could trick the mind as easily as perception altering substances… would a pensieve provide an insight into an event that had not been remembered, she wondered, or would an ineffectively created memory (for example, if a person had been inebriated at the time) have insufficient substance for exploration? Relatedly, was it easier to use a particularly strong memory in a pensieve over a weaker recollection? Claudia noted her musings for further research, and then returned her attention to Professor McKindy as he demonstrated the spell.

Exploring another person’s memories was an incredible intimate task. Claudia had chosen Remington to work with because she had less mistrust for the fourth year than for many of the other people in the class, and because the younger girls was intelligent and astute, and they had worked together successfully in classes before. While Claudia would not be opposed to developing a friendship with Remy, she had no desire to enter into the other girl’s memories. “It should be a memory that you’re willing to share,” Professor McKindy stated the obvious, “because once you place it in the bowl, your partner will enter that memory for its duration.” Claudia froze, her quill partway through a word, the ink beginning to pool on the parchment where the nib remained motionless. The professor was saying something about daydreams or nightmares, but Claudia only registered some of his words, the rest weathered away by the ferocious storm her thoughts had brewed.

“Perhaps a memory could prove that a thing did or did not happen,” Claudia said quietly, looking levelly at Remington. It could prove that a friend had turned on her with no provocation. It could prove that the only spells Claudia had cast were to prevent further harm coming to her already injured person. The fifth year didn’t know what lies Dade had told his friends about what had happened in the corridor last term (she assumed he must have told them something, because otherwise why would they still be friends with him after that?) but Claudia could show Remington, at least, what had really happened. She should know what her friend was capable of.

Of course, if Remy didn’t want to see it, Claudia wasn’t going to force her. Professor McKindy had said they should know what to expect from each other’s memory. The Cetus lowered her quill, and subconsciously bunched the skirt of her pale yellow lace wrap-around dress into her fists, knuckles pressing into her legs. “There’s a particular memory I’d like you to see,” Claudia said to Remington’s notes, because she couldn’t meet the Draco’s eyes. “It’s the reason I - the reason I needed your help last year. You should see it. Someone should see it.” Nobody else had been in the corridor that day. There had only been her word against Dade’s, and somehow her word hadn’t been good enough for most.
