Let's get to it, then

Remington gave Claudia her express permission to show whatever she wanted. Even if she had not correctly guessed at the event Claudia had in mind (and she probably had, because Remy was smart, and Claudia had hardly been cryptic in her suggestion), that was sufficient consent, as far as the fifth year was concerned, to produce the memory in question. With a brisk nod, Claudia released the folds of her dress, and clutched her wand instead, its smooth handle feeling reassuring in her grasp. “Shall we try, then?” she stood up, the actions suggesting more courage and preparedness than Claudia genuinely felt. It would be reassuring to hear that she had been wronged, but some self-doubt had begun to join the swirling hurricane that was her thoughts: what if Remy did not see the event the same way Claudia had interpreted it? They had both considered mere minutes earlier that a memory was not necessarily reliable proof. Still, even if that were the case, Claudia could perhaps depend upon Remy to explain some detail that maybe Claudia had missed. There must have been something motivating Dade to turn on her, after all - she just had no idea what that could possibly be.

As she approached the pensieve, Claudia was feeling anxious, but determined. She was shaking a little, but she held her wand steady. She would wager that she knew more about mind magic than many of the other students in the practical lab, and her practical skills in Spellwork had always been above average. She had confidence in her ability to cast the spell, and knew that the memory she had selected was clear and enduring: she had revisited it every day since its creation.

Her dark blonde hair was in a single fishtail braid today, tied back as usual for practical classes. Claudia raised her wand and touched its tip to her head, and said the incantation as Professor McKindy had done. Gradually she moved her wand away, a glistening, gossamer fine thread clinging to it by one end, floating lightly down into the pensieve. As the memory settled, the image of a familiar student with a wand in his hand, half-concealed by a wall of roaring flames, flashed briefly across the surface before swirling in on itself.

Claudia looked up and met Remington’s gaze. “Are you sure?” she asked, now there was no question of which memory the fifth year had selected. She would not hold it against Remy if the younger girl decided not to live Claudia’s worst experience; Claudia was forced to relieve it every day, but she would not wish that on most, especially not someone who had been so helpful to her.
