Let's make some more moments

Spellwork was one of Teal’s favorite classes. Professor McKindy was funny (in both ways), and the subject came naturally to her. To be honest, Teal felt bad for someone who wasn’t good at wandwork. Wasn’t that the whole point of being a wizard? If you couldn’t do Charms or Transfiguration or hexes, you were kinda halfway to being a squib already. Teal really didn’t understand why RMI let you drop Spellwork. It meant you could graduate without ever learning how to Banish something. And, Spellwork had a bunch of book learning as well, which meant you’d graduate without a solid foundation of magical theory. Teal found theory almost as interesting as just learning a whole bunch of incantations. With theory, you could create new spells or enchanted artifacts, which was the coolest of all. Teal had dropped Ancient Runes this year, because eight classes was just Too Many, and you could still enchant lots of things without runes. She wished she had time for it, though, because when the fifth year thought about the future, she thought she wanted to be a person-who-made-cool-enchanted-stuff.

And one of the weirdest enchanted stuff was a Pensieve. Teal gawped at the stone bowl at the front of the class. It was a bowl that contained memories, and you could PUT YOUR OWN in them, and then other people could GO IN THEM. She’d read about them, but never seen one until today. How had someone even come up with the idea for this? Who was the first person to go in someone else’s memories? And, according to the textbook, well-formed memories could be as detailed as real life, which meant the memory in the bowl was more detailed than a memory in your head. How did that even work??

She was fascinated. But also horrified, because Professor McKindy said if you did it wrong, your memories could turn into nightmares, and that sounded terrible. Fortunately, Teal was distracted from thinking about which of her memories were nightmareish by a tickling sensation on the back of her hand. She looked down-- a small striped feline was inspecting her fingers.

“Ooooh, hi pretty girl!” Teal cooed softly to Professor McKindy’s cat. “But I don’t have any treats, sorry.” She tried to rub Circe’s head, but the cat gave her a disdainful look and expertly dodged the pat. The cat turned away in search of someone who had brought treats. Teal returned to her original problem. She needed to find a partner who she’d be okay with seeing her memories, especially a “challenge”. Why, McKindy? There was only one person in the classroom who fit the bill, and Teal needed to find her before her generous, friendly girlfriend partnered up with someone else.

Teal stood up and almost collided with Buckley, who’d approached her. Oh, no, was it because she was wearing lipstick? And a dress? The Lyra boy had a smirk on his stupid face (as usual), and as he opened his mouth, Teal cut him off with a shrill “Nah, I’m good, thanks!” She pushed past him and hurried away. Behind her, Buckley grumbled that he totally wasn’t gonna ask her to work together anyway. Teal rolled her eyes. Buckley was such a creep. He’d totally ask for a memory about swimming or going to the beach just so he could see a girl in a swimsuit. Teal made a beeline for Marley. If someone else tried to work with her -- either her-- well, she’d just have to hex the interloper.

  • A Moment to Remember [Spellwork, Yrs IV - VII] - Professor Aaron McKindy, Fri Jul 13 18:55
Mrawr . “No, Circe,” Aaron said absent-mindedly, petting the cat with one hand. The other hand was stuck in the pocket of his blue jeans. His wand was in the back pocket of his jeans, and there was... more

            • What would you consider productive? - Teal, Sun Jul 29 12:07
Okay, this was not going well. Marley was using the determinedly calm voice that Mom and Dad sometimes used on Violet. It meant you were starting to get pissed off but you didn’t want the other... more

There weren’t many times Teal got exactly what she asked for. Surprisingly, her plea had gotten through to Marley. Unsurprisingly, Teal didn’t want to hear what the other girl had to say. Marley... more

Marley felt an immediate wave of guilt at the look on the other girl’s face. She’d never seen Teal look so sad before, and it made her feel even worse, and she had to hastily wipe an extra set of... more
