Huh. Drew thought it was possible that Dade could maybe not go to Defense Against the Dark Arts for the entire term. Dade was skeptical about that idea because he was skeptical about Professor Idiot’s ability to teach, but maybe her inability to teach would result in her actually letting him not come to class. Plus, Drew knew her better than anyone else except maybe Kit, because she was his aunt (or something). She was also Kit’s aunt, and from what Dade understood of Drew’s kind of complicated family tree she was technically closer to Kit than she was to Drew, but Dade suspected that Kit wasn’t a good judge of what things were and were not possible. After all, Kit was the one who brought her pet spider to everything and treated it like it was another person that could understand them. That was creepy.

Dade’s hazel eyes were cast downward, the flush fading from his cheeks more slowly than he would have liked. He had noticed Drew casting a spell for privacy, which he appreciated. There wasn’t any need for the entire class to know that he had failed a year, or that he was trying to get out of coming to Defense Against the Dark Arts for the rest of the term. Drew’s hand was still near to him and briefly, Dade felt the urge to grab it. He dismissed the thought as quickly as it came, reassuring himself that everyone had random thoughts like that. It wasn’t that he really wanted to kiss Drew or to hold his hand or anything like that, it was just the sort of thoughts that everyone had. Like everyone got sick of their gender sometimes, especially boys. It was normal but nobody talked about it, so they wouldn’t sound super gay or something.

Not that Dade had anything against gay people. He wasn’t Connor, and Mr. Tennant and Professor McKindy had been really nice to him, so far this year anyway. Holland was a nonbinary and Dade didn’t understand if that made them and/or Danny gay (he hadn’t asked) but he thought it might and he really liked Holland a lot. They had helped him out with shopping and had given him really good advice about protecting himself from Connor and Claudia. He missed Holland, even though he hadn’t been close friends or anything with the older student. He missed Rose, too. Dade wished that he could go back to Boston, except - Boston didn’t have Drew. Plus, Dade was pretty sure that he could get Drew to hang out with him in his room more now that the Age Line was there. Maybe Drew could show him some more music that he liked.

“If you think it might work,” Dade said, a little dubiously, shifting a little bit. His pants were fitted in spots he wasn’t used to pants being fitted. He wondered if Drew had noticed his new outfit, and if Drew liked his new outfit. Would it be weird to mention it? Probably it would be, Dade decided. Boys didn’t really talk about clothes that much, although Madeleine would probably be very excited about it. “I think Professor McKindy likes me more than she does.” He paused. “I guess maybe I should stay in class though,” Dade said, remembering something. “Since I can’t do self-defense club anymore. And I need to practise somewhere.”

  • How about a hint? - Drew, Tue Jul 17 10:57
The last couple times someone had come close to crying in front of Drew, they had been total strangers. He thought he got along with Satveer and Leon now, but it had still been really uncomfortable... more

      • Would you take a trade? - Drew, Wed Jul 18 18:39
Drew wasn’t sure that it would work, but, as he told Dade, “It can’t hurt to ask.” There had to be a way to spin it to Aunt Cindra. The hard part would be getting her to agree to individual lessons... more

Oh no. Dade thought he’d told Drew he couldn’t do self defense club anymore but he apparently hadn’t, and now he couldn’t remember what he had thought he’d told Drew was the reason. Because he... more

Wait, what? Confused, Drew furrowed his brows. Remington and Claudia weren’t friends. At least he didn’t think they were. Okay, he had seen them talking at the April Fool’s party (which must be the... more
            • You gotta be more specific - Dade, Fri Jul 20 10:08
Dade was in a bad mood now. Drew wasn’t mad, but Dade should have known that the other Cetus wouldn’t believe him. Nobody ever believed him anymore, except Rose and Holland. Maybe if Holland and Rose ... more
              • That would ruin the surprise! - Drew, Fri Jul 20 11:08

Oh. Drew was presenting a point that Dade hadn’t thought of. It made much more sense for Remington to be pretending to be Claudia’s friend to spy on her for Dade, if only because Claudia was slimy... more

What if I were? was the phrase that wanted to come out of Dade’s mouth. He was feeling impulsive and a little reckless and like his heart was beating a little too fast. He didn’t didn’t know why he... more
