Oh no. Dade thought he’d told Drew he couldn’t do self defense club anymore but he apparently hadn’t, and now he couldn’t remember what he had thought he’d told Drew was the reason. Because he definitely knew he couldn’t say that it was because Remington was Claudia’s spy, because Drew was friends with Remington and Dade didn’t want to upset him and make him choose between his friends, mostly because Dade was pretty sure Drew would pick Remington over him. Dade wasn’t sure how he would handle that if it happened, but he was pretty sure that would be the absolute worst thing. If Drew didn’t like him anymore that would mean Madeleine didn’t either, and then he would have absolutely no friends and there would be no point to him even being at school. There was already practically no point to him being at school because it was just a matter of time before things went sideways again and something else happened and Claudia attacked him, or told everyone about what Connor had told her.

“I just,” Dade started, looking around the room for inspiration and finding none. “It’s dangerous now. I can’t.” Was it just him or did Drew look confused? Was Drew angry? Dade couldn’t tell from the expression on his face. Maybe Drew was upset that they weren’t going to be doing self defense club together again. Maybe Drew was mad at him, because it was his fault. Well if Drew was going to be mad at him anyway, Dade decided, he might was well let the other boy know the real reason. “Remington is friends with Claudia. They hung out at the party last term, Kit told me,” Dade explained, lowering his voice even though there was a privacy spell up. “Claudia can’t know the spells I know, otherwise I won’t be able to protect myself next time.”

Plus, Remington’s betrayal meant that he couldn’t even consider himself safe if he was with her. What if she decided to tell Claudia how Dade was going to get to and from self defense club? It would be easy for Remington to get Drew to stay after, and then Dade would be walking back through the passageways all on his own, and Claudia would be able to attack him and nobody would even know.

Dade looked down and realised that his fists were all balled up. He tried to relax them but couldn’t. Now everything was over and Drew was going to be mad at him. Plus, he might even tell Remington that Dade knew she was friends with Claudia. After all, Dade wasn’t sure that she knew he knew. He had found out that she was friends with Claudia from Kit, after all. Kit was crazy but she also didn’t lie about things ever and would have had no reason to lie about Claudia anyway. She hadn’t even told him on purpose, she’d just been babbling about the party and that piece of information had fallen out. If it was someone else, Dade might have suspected she had an ulterior motive, but with Kit he wasn’t even sure if she ever had a regular motive. Drew’s cousin never spent more than a second or two considering what she was about to do, that was pretty apparent by any passing conversation with her.

  • Would you take a trade? - Drew, Wed Jul 18 18:39
Drew wasn’t sure that it would work, but, as he told Dade, “It can’t hurt to ask.” There had to be a way to spin it to Aunt Cindra. The hard part would be getting her to agree to individual lessons... more

      • Hopefully something you want - Drew, Fri Jul 20 08:37
Wait, what? Confused, Drew furrowed his brows. Remington and Claudia weren’t friends. At least he didn’t think they were. Okay, he had seen them talking at the April Fool’s party (which must be the... more
        • You gotta be more specific - Dade, Fri Jul 20 10:08
Dade was in a bad mood now. Drew wasn’t mad, but Dade should have known that the other Cetus wouldn’t believe him. Nobody ever believed him anymore, except Rose and Holland. Maybe if Holland and Rose ... more
          • That would ruin the surprise! - Drew, Fri Jul 20 11:08
Because he had grown up being simultaneously the hero to Kit’s sidekick and the sidekick to Kit’s hero, Drew had what one of their elementary school teachers had once called “inhuman patience.” Drew... more
            • I don't like surprises - Dade, Fri Jul 20 16:45
Oh. Drew was presenting a point that Dade hadn’t thought of. It made much more sense for Remington to be pretending to be Claudia’s friend to spy on her for Dade, if only because Claudia was slimy... more

You had to understand how people normally reacted to things so that you understood how important them not reacting to something was. For example, if Dade had had an argument against what Drew was... more
                • So what about this time? - Dade, Fri Jul 20 18:14
What if I were? was the phrase that wanted to come out of Dade’s mouth. He was feeling impulsive and a little reckless and like his heart was beating a little too fast. He didn’t didn’t know why he... more

The words Drew was saying made sense but also the words Drew was saying made no sense. Dade just didn’t understand it. Why would you prefer to wear guy clothes all the time? Sure, Dade didn’t - no,... more

More than anything, Dade was annoyed. He was annoyed at himself for saying things that were confusing, he was annoyed at Drew for being nice and for saying things that made Dade say confusing things, ... more

Drew couldn’t help it: he jumped a bit when Dade smacked the table the first time. He wasn’t as startled when Dade did it again, but he was expecting a third hit and felt a little lacking when there... more
