Wait, what?

Confused, Drew furrowed his brows. Remington and Claudia weren’t friends. At least he didn’t think they were. Okay, he had seen them talking at the April Fool’s party (which must be the party Dade meant), but a conversation didn’t mean they were friends. Surely Remington would have mentioned if they were friends now, over the summer if not sooner. She must to know how Dade would feel about that, and Remington wasn’t the kind of person who lied or lied by omission for her own benefit.

And so what if they were friends? Dade was suggesting that, what, Remington would tell Claudia about the things they did in self-defense so that Claudia could attack Dade again (not actually “again” because as far as Drew could tell from what Dad and Dade had said, she had scared Dade the first time, not actually attacked him)? Dade was one of the smartest people Drew knew, but that might be the dumbest thing Drew had ever heard. Of course Remington wouldn’t help someone go after her best friend. First of all, she was a Draco, and Dracos were loyal, and second of all, she was Remington. And anyway why would you ever rely on Kit for interpersonal information? Kit was great at a lot of things—running really fast, knowing all about tarantulas, coming up with fun games, making cool crafts—but accurately reporting an event was Drew’s strong suit, not hers.

“I’m pretty sure they’re not friends,” Drew said, slowly, like he was still trying to choose the next word when the last one came out of his mouth. “They just talked that one time. But even if they were friends, Remington wouldn’t tell her about stuff we do in self-defense club. She takes keeping it a secret really seriously.” Drew himself was the only one who had ever told someone else about self-defense club, and that was just to bring Ruben in to be their sponsor, which he still counted as a great decision. He hadn’t even told his dad about the club when he was kind-of-but-not-really in trouble for doing extra DADA research.

Dade looked stressed and scared. He was clenching his fists so tightly that the knuckles were turning white. Trying to help him relax or feel reassured, Drew put his hand on Dade’s wrist. “I get that you’re worried about Claudia, and why.” Ish. Dade wouldn’t tell Drew everything but he thought he had more or less pieced it all together. Oh. Hang on. “That’s why you didn’t write Remington back over the summer,” he said, just realizing it now for the first time. It made sense now. In a weird Dade-logic kind of way. “Have you talked to her about it? I don’t think she knows how much her talking to Claudia bothers you. She didn’t know why you weren’t writing and she was kinda bummed about it.”

  • Depends on what you've got - Dade, Fri Jul 20 06:46
Oh no. Dade thought he’d told Drew he couldn’t do self defense club anymore but he apparently hadn’t, and now he couldn’t remember what he had thought he’d told Drew was the reason. Because he... more

Dade was in a bad mood now. Drew wasn’t mad, but Dade should have known that the other Cetus wouldn’t believe him. Nobody ever believed him anymore, except Rose and Holland. Maybe if Holland and Rose ... more
