That would ruin the surprise!

Because he had grown up being simultaneously the hero to Kit’s sidekick and the sidekick to Kit’s hero, Drew had what one of their elementary school teachers had once called “inhuman patience.” Drew didn’t think there was anything inhuman about it. He just liked it when people he cared about got along and were happy, and when Kit was a person you cared about, you had to figure out how to work with her so that you wouldn’t suddenly find yourself involved in a playground feud because someone had carelessly told her something she liked was stupid. Either way it was a nice skill to have when you were related to someone like Kit, or roommates with someone like Huburt, or friends with someone like Dade.

So when Dade jerked away from him and snapped that he wasn’t gay, Drew didn’t retort immediately. And now Dade was glaring at Drew like this was all his fault. Merlin, Circe, and Agrippa. Drew took a deep breath in through his nose and tried not to let it out in an exasperated sigh.

He was getting frustrated with this conversation. Why didn’t Dade just listen? Why did he have to think everyone was out to get him all the time? No one had ever even done anything to Dade, except that Claudia and Connor had made him feel uncomfortable. And how was Drew supposed to show him that everything was really okay when Dade wouldn’t listen to reason?

Drew’s instinct was to point out that no one had said Dade was gay (Drew was pretty sure Dade had something going on with his gender, but that wasn’t the same thing). He also wanted to say that even if Dade was gay, that wouldn’t be a bad thing, so there was no reason for him to get so defensive about it. Having been raised by two men Drew was naturally primed to defend queer people, even though he shouldn’t have to with Dade.

Then there was the Remington issue. She had said she wrote Dade, so maybe her letters didn’t reach him? He’d moved to Boston with Rose, so maybe she’d just sent the letters to his old address in England. ...also it was kind of sad that Madeleine was the only person who had written to Dade during the summer. Drew had only written to Darlene over the summer—and sometimes to Remy when she wrote the first letter—but maybe next summer he should write to Dade too. That was a future problem, because he also had to deal with the Claudia thing right now. Dade thought Remington was a spy? Come on. It was hard to make an argument based on “Remington would never do that,” especially because Drew was sure that even if he came up with a really good, fact-based argument, Dade would just create another illogical reason to poke a hole in it with.

Drew came really close to telling Dade to just chill out before he caught himself and reminded himself that wouldn’t help. “I believe,” he said slowly instead, taking time to get a grip on what he should tell Dade, “that they’ve talked. But I’m sure if you asked Remington not to say anything about you to Claudia, she would agree. There’s just no way for her to know what you want unless one of us tells her. I get that you have a reason to believe it but I can’t think of why Remington would spy on you for her. What if it’s the other way around and she’s finding out more about Claudia for you?” He didn’t believe Remington was a spy for either side but maybe if Dade would latch onto that idea things would be better. Then he couldn’t help adding, “And why would it matter if you’re gay or—or something like that? It’s not a bad thing.” That came out a little more defensive than Drew mean it to, but the way Dade had said that was really bothering him.

  • You gotta be more specific - Dade, Fri Jul 20 10:08
Dade was in a bad mood now. Drew wasn’t mad, but Dade should have known that the other Cetus wouldn’t believe him. Nobody ever believed him anymore, except Rose and Holland. Maybe if Holland and Rose ... more

Oh. Drew was presenting a point that Dade hadn’t thought of. It made much more sense for Remington to be pretending to be Claudia’s friend to spy on her for Dade, if only because Claudia was slimy... more
