Jesse Keller
I can't think of a witty pun

The practical lab was very different this term than it had been the previous term. There were squishy chairs and a strange selection of toys and gadgets, and the curtains were a very pale green, just like Jesse’s favorite hoodie. He wasn’t wearing it today because it was still warm at the end of the summer, and he wore his uniform robes over a grey t-shirt with orange star prints on and faded grey jeans that had almost but not quite worn through in their knees. Jesse didn’t know if the rooms changed at the start of every term, because this was only his second year at RMI, so maybe the rooms did change and they would be like it for the rest of term, and then in his third year they would be something different again? Jesse didn’t know how to feel about that. He’d gotten used to RMI and he didn’t need it to keep changing. It’s like when he went home and his Mom had changed the throw on the couch from blue to red. It was still the same old, threadbare couch underneath, but the color of the throw completely changed the look of not just the couch, but the whole room. The texture was different, too, so you couldn’t just pretend when you were watching TV that nothing had changed. Jesse had liked the blue throw better. He did not object to the new layout of the practical lab, but adjusting to change had never come easily to him. Attending RMI in the first place had been a huge alteration that had taken Jesse considerable time to adapt to, and if it was going to keep changing every year then perhaps that would not be an optimum situation.

However, Jesse curiously approached the small collection of beginner students already congregated around the small, hand-sized objects. Jesse picked one up that was a cube with buttons on it. He pressed a button; it made a clicking sound. He repeated the motion. Nothing else happened, but the clicking was satisfying. The Draco stood there for a minute or two, clicking buttons against his palm while he continued to visually scrutinize the other changes to the room, and then Professor Embers was greeting them so Jesse stopped clicking to listen. He appreciated the honesty of her opinion that the lower years of DADA were unexciting, but Jesse was not certain he would agree with her. Despite having a witch and wizard for parents, the dark-haired second year had amassed little knowledge of defensive spells or theory when he had arrived at RMI - he supposed defending the family against Dark magic had not been of paramount concern during Jesse’s existence - and Muggleborns would probably have yet fewer preconceptions. Ergo a considerable amount of what he had learned last year had been exciting to Jesse, and he anticipated some topics, at the very least, would be intriguing this year and the next. Professor Embers ought to have more faith in her subject. Perhaps she was in the wrong profession?

Apparently today they were going to attempt the practical aspect of the class before reading the theory. It seemed to Jesse to be an even split between that approach and its reverse in his wand-required classes. The spell was on the board, and Jesse rummaged in his book bag until he found his wand. Now all he needed was a partner. Ambivalent towards the majority of his peers, Jesse simply approached the nearest body and asked, “Would you mind working with me on this assignment today?”
