Oh. Drew was presenting a point that Dade hadn’t thought of. It made much more sense for Remington to be pretending to be Claudia’s friend to spy on her for Dade, if only because Claudia was slimy and kind of evil, and Remington was really nice. Remington was probably nice enough to be nice to someone who was kind of evil, but she probably wouldn’t be nice to someone who was trying to hurt Dade for no reason. Drew was so smart. Dade wouldn’t have ever thought of that because he kept getting wrapped up in how terrifying it was that someone who had been so close to him was now getting close to the person who was trying to attack him. But if Remington was only getting close to Claudia to spy on her - that made a lot more sense. There was a part of him that was still suspicious of Remington, but Drew’s explanation made Dade less inclined toward suspicion.

There was still the part where he’d failed his STOATs though, which he didn’t want to tell her about. Remington was really smart and she studied a lot. Dade was pretty bright himself, but with everything that had happened last year now he was going to be behind and Remington was going to want to try and help. He wasn’t sure if he could take Remington helping him like that. Not because she was a girl or whatever (growing up with Rose meant that Dade had no preconceived notions about girls not being capable, mostly because Rose would have hexed it out of him if he had) but because Dade didn’t want to feel like the friend everyone else had to drag along the way. It was bad enough that he couldn’t be around the school without someone with him; it didn’t need to be classes too.

Anyway, Dade was about to tell Drew that he was right and maybe even to say thank-you for explaining what was probably happening when Drew decided to have a problem with Dade saying he wasn’t gay. Dade scowled.

“Because I’m not!” he said, defensively. “If someone said you were a girl or something you’d be mad too,” Dade paused. Well, maybe not mad. He wasn’t sure if Drew ever really got mad. On the one hand, everyone got mad sometimes. On the other hand, Kit. “Well I mean maybe not mad but you wouldn’t like it, because you only want to wear girl clothes and stuff sometimes. That’s different from being a girl. It’s the same thing, I’m not gay so I don’t want people so say I am.”
