Don't wanna be all by myself
Sat Jul 21, 2018 05:51

Leah hated this partner exercise. Of course, this was due to her fear of the unfamiliar. Here she was, all alone in a strange place surrounded by people she didn’t know.

In this moment, she’d have given anything to make Professor Embers change her mind and assign students into pairs. That would make things so much easier!

At the other side of the room, she could see Elliot, but unfortunately it looked like he’d already teamed up with another student. Besides, it would probably be very uncool of her to cling to him. Unlike her, Elliot seemed extroverted and happy to mingle, and Leah cringed at the idea of being “that annoying friend”, following him wherever he went, doing whatever he did.

Fidgeting with her new robes – she didn’t know how she felt about wearing a school uniform yet – she considered not partnering up and perhaps hiding behind the honey-coloured curtains for the entirety of the lesson. Would she be able to get away with that? No. Definitely not. Professor Embers had said that everyone had to practice. Also, she was itching to use her wand for the first time ever and try this intriguing disarming spell. If only she could practice on herself!
Come on, she urged herself silently, now or never! Slowly moving around the room, Leah tried to make eye contact with students who were also still on their own, but none of them seemed to be looking her way. Great…

Suddenly, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Heart racing, the Draco first-year turned around. Facing her was a dark-haired boy about her age, asking her if she’d like to work with him. She was pretty sure that she hadn’t seen him before. He looked a bit pale, but neither unfriendly nor scary. Leah was so surprised that she simply nodded yes.

After a few seconds of silence, she remembered her manners. (One thing RMI had already taught her was not forgetting to introduce herself.) Clearing her throat, she extended her hand to the other student. “My name is Leah. Nice to meet you.”

Unsure how to start, she gently waved her other hand in which she held her wand. “Do you know how to do this?”
