This was it. No more boring, everyday, run of the mill, muggle school. Vivica was now in fully fledged, no holes barred, skin of your teeth, wizarding school… ‘and the first thing they teach us, is how to defend yourself. I’m not sure I’m entirely comfortable with that!’.

In the previous 24 hours, she’s experienced only one episode, much less that she anticipated given that Vivica was very much still trying to find her feet in this new world. She was sharing a room with ’what’s her name again?’... Vivica was terrible with names, but her roomie was a lovely girl who Vivica hoped to make friends with. She’d woken slightly earlier than planned and it had given her time to get dressed slowly and contemplate her wears. Her first day saw her don some black Converse hi-tops with rainbow laces. Black skinny jeans and a white baseball shirt with the orangy-red St Anger album imagery on the front. Atop that, she wore her robes, and tied her hair in a low ponytail with a large glittery ‘gay friendly’ rainbow bow and hair-bobble. Vivica didn’t know what the LGBT(QIAPK) ’It’s a good job they don’t put that on business cards!’ community was like at RMI... and not that she was a member of the lengthy acronym society like Uncle T, even though he’d be proud... It not only looked lovely, but it was a symbol to any and all that she was gay OK.

After common room, Vivica also experienced her first (not so) magical breakfast of: star shaped fried egg on buttered toast. Vivica doubted the star shaped fried egg was a regular occurrence at the breakfast table, but she could hope. Having studied the map of the school carefully throughout the morning, Vivica joined the bustle of students making way to their first lessons of the term. The corridors were loud with the excitement of the adolescents movements, but through the din, Vivica could hear the nervousness of anticipation every once in a while, ’what is a Dade?’

Vivica had thought about her positioning within the classroom. Not too close to the front and not too far back. But also, not dead-set in the middle. It was purely a tactical decision that, in theory, gave her: the best view of what both the teacher professor was doing, and how the students in front were were attempting/doing it. And she wouldn’t be too close to the back as to draw attention from any, presumably naughty, students who prefered to linger from the professors gaze. The excitement factor of the everyday RMI magic had not yet worn off for Vivica and the entrance of the chalkboard and appearing words made her smile with glee. She still didn’t or even couldn’t, believe this was all hidden from the muggle world.

’Pathetic. A waste of time.’

As the rather vibrant ’Shouldn’t she be in a lab coat? Or a cloak? Surely that’s stereotypical or something’, Professor Embers tailed off Vivica took a breath and focussed on the goings on. The class had started shuffling, and with the other students, Vivica leaned down under the bench and searched for her wand in her bag. Whilst she had an idea of what was required for the days lessons, Vivica liked to be prepared and often carried more than was really necessary. Even in the muggle world, this made rummaging in her bag a regular occurance. ’or never!’
As Vivica looked up from her bag, she caught the eye of another, what looked to be, first year. Whilst Vivica would have liked to have paired up with a friendly third year (being new to this and all), this first year had a look.
“Sure” Vivica grinned. “Be gentle though, I’m laughably new to this!”
