A flash of red light blinded Leah, and she instinctively closed her eyes. Simultaneously, she felt her wand slip out of her hand. Her eyes flew open again just in time for her to see it hitting the ceiling. Unfortunately, she wasn’t thinking quickly enough to move away, so when it came down again, it hit her square on the head.

It hurt. A lot. She had to bite the inside of her cheek in order not to cry. At the same time, she rubbed her head a little, focused on Jesse and tried to make herself look very enthusiastic, despite her pain.

“You did it! Congrats!”

After picking up her wand from the floor (which looked just fine upon closer examination – she couldn’t even spot a scratch), she made her way towards him.

“That was great! I kind of had this feeling from the start that you’d be good at this.” Leah tried to keep talking, but she didn’t really know what else to say. Why did making friends have to be this hard?

She dropped her gaze to conceal her shyness, and it landed on Jesse’s wand. Oh no. She’d almost forgotten that it was now her turn to disarm him.

Leah could feel her wand hand starting to shake. This was by far the most challenging day of her life.
