Too bad this wasn't motivation enough

Marley felt an immediate wave of guilt at the look on the other girl’s face. She’d never seen Teal look so sad before, and it made her feel even worse, and she had to hastily wipe an extra set of tears away from both eyes before they rolled too far down her face. The feeling that they were breaking up was a lot stronger now, and it was quickly confirmed with Teal’s next words. It was probably for the best - except no it wasn’t, because the best-case scenario would’ve been Teal agreeing that it had been unfair to her and talking more about why she wouldn’t come out to her family and just generally helping her to understand and maybe they could’ve come up with a way for Marley to help her come out. So breaking up wasn’t for the best, but it was probably better than keeping dating and keeping having to lie to her parents and keeping feeling bad. But it also was making her feel a lot more bad right now than she’d expected.

“I’m really sorry,” she persisted, trying to make eye contact with Teal and trying to keep the quivers out of her voice and not totally succeeding at either. “I hope you’ll forgive me and we can still…” Still what? Still be friends? That was such a cliché thing to say, plus if YA lit had taught her anything, it was that you could never go back to just-friends with your ex and everything being all happy and normal and it was a waste of time to even try. But she still liked Teal, even if dating her hadn’t been perfect, and it had taken literally years of them being friends before they started dating and it seemed like even more of a waste to go back to square one. And more to the point, Marley didn’t want to lose her completely, even though she couldn’t honestly say she wanted to stay with her in class right now. But also dating wasn’t supposed to be perfect, because nothing was perfect and people and relationships especially so, and had this been a mistake??

She hadn’t been able to think of the right way to finish her sentence, leaving enough of a pause that it would’ve been more awkward to stuff another word in, but she’d finally (maybe mistakenly) gotten Teal to understand her so hopefully that would continue and she’d get the gist of what Marley meant from what little she had managed to say. They were now right in front of the Pensieve, and she stepped closer as Teal poked it with her wand, watching the ripples on the liquid surface.

Any memory option she’d previously thought of was unnecessary now, Marley quickly decided, and shook her head in response. “I’ll pick something else. Something… happier, maybe.” She didn’t want to leave Teal feeling all down, and she didn’t want to leave off that way herself, too, and if she could use a memory to cheer the Draco up even if it was only for as long as the memory lasted… Yeah, that was a way better idea. The problem was that the first very-happy memory she thought of was when she and Teal first kissed, and there was no way that would help her feel better. But a few seconds more in thought, and she landed on one that would work instead from a couple years ago, when she introduced the brand-new Mister Sprockets to Dad and Mister Sprockets had decided to roost in one of the hard gelled peaks of his mohawk and refused to come down. It wasn’t her happiest memory, but it was a short funny burst of shenanigans, and always made her giggle to look back on. Glancing at Teal, she had the urge to grab her hand or something, but they couldn’t do that ever again not necessarily ever again (her own parents had broken up how many times?) but not for a while at least. “It’d be great to see Godzilla. Go for it. Or like, whatever you want, whatever’s easy.”

There weren’t many times Teal got exactly what she asked for. Surprisingly, her plea had gotten through to Marley. Unsurprisingly, Teal didn’t want to hear what the other girl had to say. Marley... more
