Unafraid to tread

Here was the thing: the thing was that now, Drew had to do Dueling Club. He would’ve done it anyway—in fact, he’d been in Dueling Club before third year—but now that Claudia had told Dad about Drew’s notebook and Drew had had to talk to him about it and Dad had suggested Dueling Club as an option for learning protective magic, he sort of had to go. It showed that he was following the suggestion. But with STOATs this year, plus Rocky Voices and Quidditch and the musical and self-defense club, Dueling Club was a pretty low priority. The whole needing-to-do-stuff thing was really cutting into his just-chilling time.

(Drew was also thinking about getting a job on Pearl Street, which would cut his uncommitted time down to pretty much nil. This year might not be the right time for it because of all the other stuff filling up his schedule, but he would just go for it if Deep River Records had an opening. It would be so cool to work in a record shop.)

He showed up to Dueling Club anyway, even though Aunt Cindra was nowhere near as good a teacher as either Ruben or Remy armed with Ruben’s notes. Drew was happy to work with anyone, but he usually ended up partnered with one of his friends or with younger students who needed some guidance. A couple of the first-years were what his dad would call “worryingly eager” about dueling—Drew honestly wouldn’t be surprised if some kind of fight happened before the year was out—but he liked showing them stuff. He’d kind of taught shield charms to one of the Aquilas (mostly because he figured that even a first-year couldn’t do much damage with Protego), and the kid seemed pretty pleased even though his shield wasn’t strong enough to block Drew’s spells. Even though Drew didn’t want to be a teacher, he liked teaching. It made Dueling Club a little more fun, and explaining a spell was kind of like a refresher on it.

It took a few moments of her standing robeless at one end of a mat for Drew to recognize Claudia. Big old nope to that, Drew thought sensibly. Claudia rolling up to Dueling Club wearing a crop top and workout leggings was T-r-o-u-b-l-e and that stood for pool. Then there was a kind of a pause and Drew was forced to redact his big old nope. Maybe if he could take Claudia in a duel, it would help the Dade situation. Getting to duel him might help Claudia with whatever kind of paranoid-phobia thing she had going on (Remington had alluded to it but Drew had been more concerned about Dade’s mess at the time so he wasn’t totally clear). No matter what it was, this could help with that. Probably. There was really a kind of logic to his decision to step up to the mat.

Drew shed his silvery robes and readied his cedar and dragon heartstring wand, aimed right at Claudia as he settled into the dueling stance that was the result of both Aaron’s and Ruben’s guidance. “Ladies first,” Drew said, tilting his head permissively, half invitation and half challenge. He had Quidditch-trained reflexes and was quick on his feet, and his shield charms were good enough for tutoring. He could block or dodge whatever Claudia threw at him.
