I admire your courage

Claudia experienced considerably mixed emotions when Andrew Tennant placed himself in her opposition. She had been hoping for someone closer to her own age, who might present a worthy challenge, rather than a third year, still in the beginner classes. On the other hand, Claudia knew for certain now that Drew was studying defensive magic: she had suspected as much as long ago as Thanksgiving the previous year, but Remington had recently confirmed her suspicions as fact. Therefore it was plausible that Andrew would prove equally adept in a duel as his older counterparts, except that he might have good reason to actually want to cause Claudia harm, rather than approaching this exercise as a practical application of theoretical knowledge. So on the first hand, Claudia might have the opportunity she desired to ascertain the level at which she could defend herself, but back on the second hand again, she didn’t relish the necessity of defending herself against whatever Dark magic Drew decided to use against her.

He aimed his wand at her, and Claudia felt the extra pulse of adrenaline course through her. Drew was friends with Dade, on his side no matter what evidence Remington had conveyed to him about the attack on Claudia. Drew had hurt Connor; physically attacked him with many witnesses. Drew was the step-child of Professor McKindy, who clearly hated Claudia, and the society for which she stood (attributing her excessive detention for causing injury to someone who vocally attacked her heritage with coarse words; she assumed Drew’s punishment for a similar infraction had been a cursory frown and verbal chastisement). Circumstantially, Claudia had openly opposed two non-heterosexual relationships of her peers in the past year, and Drew’s parents were both wizards. Claudia was finding each day at Rocky Mountain easier to survive, thanks in large part to the effort of Counselor Tennant, who would certainly not take kindly to her mutilating his son in a duel. Andrew had an unfair advantage: no staff members would object if Claudia suffered any lasting injury from this interaction. Yet, she had placed herself in this situation, and Merlin help her, she was Claudia Dubois: She would not be beaten by some third year hiding behind nepotism.

Haranaefoss,” she cast, her spell aimed at the ground upon which Drew’s feet stood. The spell was intended to render the surface as quicksand, anything upon it sinking, all nearby objects being sucked down into its depths. She did not wish to hurt him, but neither was she going to play with immature, ineffective starter spells to waste time. Immediately thereafter, Claudia cast the gripping charm on herself, more commonly used for sports personnel to keep hold of their equipment, but the beginners had recently been taught Expelliarmus, and while she was making some slight headway with wandless magic, Claudia was not prepared to engage in a duel without her wand.
