I mean you no harm

It occured to Claudia that she was among a select few people that knew Andrew was studying Dark magic. She wondered whether she could force him to show his hand, and by doing so demonstrate that she was not alone in researching and using more creative spells on those would would oppose her. It would serve her well for others to understand that she had been targeted not just by a younger student, but a younger student who was actively learning spells like that just to cast them on his friends for no apparent reason.

Remington assured Claudia that she and Andrew were learning spells to defend themselves against a legitimate evil, but Dade was not a target of the same prejudice. Even if he was such a target, or perhaps he had been acting on his friends’ behalf, Claudia had no racially or ethnically motivated prejudices or preconceptions; there was absolutely no logic in him turning on her. If his attack last year was a poorly conceived way to get back at Connor for the slurs against Andrew, Dade’s plan had monumentally backfired. Claudia and Connor were closer than ever, and Claudia had enjoyed a visit to Dade’s home in his absence. Now she was dueling his best (only?) friend, and, for Andrew’s sake, Claudia was trying not to think too hard about Dade.

The quicksand began to work immediately, which was all Claudia could witness before she was effectively blindfolded. In retaliation she cast “Tinnitum!”, sending high frequency sound waves at the place Andrew had been standing the moment her vision was obscured. In the same instant, Claudia reached up with her left hand to pull the conjured fabric away from her eyes; it turned to smoke between her fingers. Her opponent was retreating from the quicksand, but before Claudia could cast again her wand arm was pulled straight and wrapped in a split. That was clever, she thought, unable to execute the sweeping wand motion required for the spell she’d been planning to use to render Andrew temporarily breathless, as if he’d been winded. She couldn’t even aim her wand at herself to cast finite. Concentrating as hard as she ever had on wandless magic before, Claudia cast “Reducto.” The result was far from perfect, but the splint cracked and the bandage withered, enabling Claudia to move her arm again to send a rapid breath-expelling jinx at her opponent, and then to more effectively remove the same restrictions that were suddenly placed on her other arm.

Her own spells had so far aimed to disable and distract her opponent without causing harm or injury, and Drew’s were apparently of the same intention. Claudia was satisfied with this approach: it was excellent practise without danger of injury. However if she wanted to beat Andrew, she would need to more fully incapacitate him. She inhaled and cast the Tongue-Tying curse, hoping to render any sounds that Drew made unintelligible. Unless he was the first third year she had encountered who could cast magic non verbally, this would make it considerably more difficult for him to produce successful spells.

“Beats doing it alone,” Drew taunted her. Claudia wasn’t certain she believed him; having a person to practice with was probably beneficial, but then one ran the risk of being hexed in return. The... more

Drew was willing to admit it when he was wrong. It was a good trait to have, according to his dad. It had come in handy with the whole Dade and Remington situation—Drew had tried his hardest, and he... more
