Then this is a truce

Drew managed to get out of the quicksand while Claudia was distracted by his spells, but it pulled his right shoe off. He’d better get that back when the floor turned back to normal. The gray Converse he was now half-wearing were newish—he’d had a growth spurt over the summer and gotten a bunch of new clothes, although Dad said he probably wasn’t done growing (good, because Drew wanted to be taller than this)—and Drew didn’t want one stuck in the practical lab floor for the rest of eternity.

Right now, he had other things to focus on. Claudia sent out a claws-on-chalkboard shriek of sound that crashed against Drew’s shield charm. Both spells dissipated. Falling back on the physical self defense moves that Ruben had drilled them on last year, Drew leapt to the side and kept moving, so Claudia would be looking the wrong way once she got the blindfold off. He’d learned that rule pretty quickly: don’t be where your opponent expects you to be. It was part of what made dueling with Kit so difficult, because she basically just hopped all over the place at random (Drew didn’t think it was an intentional strategy on her part, but it worked anyway) so you had no idea where to cast next.

She still got him, though. It felt like he’d been punched in the diaphragm. Drew doubled over, stumbling extra because of his missing shoe. Another moment passed before he realized how bad being winded was right now. He needed to catch his breath before he could cast a spell, which meant he was shieldless and unable to cast anything offensive to further inconvenience Claudia. He couldn’t do nonverbal magic yet—Remy had started working on learning to cast silently, but Drew had enough on his plate that he would probably save that for next year—so he was out of luck until there was air in his lungs again.

He saw Claudia gearing up to cast once she got the second splint off. Drew dodged, using the fact that he was already bent over to tuck and roll away. Her bright pink mimblewimble missed him. Huh. Ground was open for speech-stopping. Drew didn’t think that was very sporting—it’d more or less end a duel right away—but if Claudia set the precedent then Drew would follow. Recovered enough for speech, Drew aimed and cast a sneezing hex, which would have the added bonus of making Claudia have to look away from him for a few seconds until the sneezing fit passed. He followed up with a spell that would tie her shoelaces together. It might not stop her from moving, but it sure would be funny if she tripped on them.

Claudia seemed pretty conventional in terms of dueling style. Just like Drew, it seemed like she wasn’t aiming to injure. Environmental spells was part of Remington’s usual pattern too, but Claudia had used more spells in a short amount of time than Remy normally did. Claudia was better at dueling than he’d expected. Maybe Dade was onto something with his fear of Claudia. She might not be learning spells to go after Dade specifically, but she had definitely done some extracurricular work. “Been practicing?” Drew called, and then fired off a spell they’d learned in self-defense club that made your opponent stuck with their eyes crossed.
