Drew’s satisfaction at his sneezing and shoe-tying spells hitting Claudia didn’t last long, as her next spell struck him. The room reeled around Drew like he’d just landed after doing barrel roll laps around the Quidditch Pitch. He managed to stay on his feet, but trying to move made it worse so he was forced to stand still.

Haven’t you?” Claudia replied. He considered thanking her for noticing—Drew wasn’t sure he was doing well in this duel, but he was holding his own against a student two years older than him, which was nothing to sniff at. He recognized the incantation for Claudia’s next spell as she began to cast and tried to move, never mind how dizzy he was: if she got him with that one on top of the spell he was already under, he’d be toast. She must have seen the Hanging Mirror jinx in his notebook, unless by coincidence she’d been looking in The Malevolent Manual, 3rd ed. of her own volition. Drew was still kind of annoyed at Dade because of the situation with Remington, but the other Cetus was right about one thing: Claudia’s snooping hadn’t been idle, if she’d taught herself a spell she stole from them.

Ugh. How was Drew going to tell his friend without making Dade more paranoid? Dade already wasn’t coming to self-defense club. Drew had made it clear that he was friends with and completely trusted Remington, but he’d offered to help Dade practice some defensive spells in the dorms sometimes (another activity he’d committed to. Maybe Drew should just give in and let Remington organize a planner for him like she’d been threatening promising) so Dade would at least know the same spells as them. Drew didn’t think he was a very good teacher, but hey, that was what Dade got for refusing to learn from the way more talented Remington and her lesson plans. Beggars couldn’t be choosers.

Not being faster than a speeding spell, Drew was hit by the jinx too. He stood at still as he could, fighting off a wave of nausea as his vision flipped twice. Claudia now appeared to be crouched on the ceiling slightly to one side of the direction Drew was facing. And she knew about defense club, too?? How?! Neither Drew nor Dade nor Remington would have said anything. Anssi seemed like he could keep a secret too. Dang it, Kit. Well, Drew definitely couldn’t tell Dade about this. But trying to figure out how much Claudia knew would tip her off if she didn’t actually know things, so—“Beats doing it alone,” Drew taunted back. If Claudia had friends who were helping her research spells too, it’d come as a shock to Drew. She didn’t seem like the collaborative type.

Handy thing about Claudia stealing that jinx from him: Drew knew how it worked. He aimed for the mirror image of where his sight told her she was (down and to the opposite side) and cast “Texō textilis,” one of the spells Aaron had taught him. Unfortunately for the third-year, Claudia wasn’t as conservatively dressed as usual—her usual layers and robes would have been ideal for this spell—but if the back of her thigh was touching her calf, or if her shirt was touching the tops of her legs, or if any other fabrics she was wearing touched, they would weave themselves together. Unless she was gonna crab-walk out of the way, he was pretty sure his spell would hit her.

Which was perfect, because now that he’d managed another spell Drew couldn’t fight off the nausea anymore. He bent (bad idea, moving his head was horrible) and threw up onto—a pile of holly leaves that had just appeared? Okay, he could work with that: it wasn’t like the vertigo was letting him go anywhere anyway. Hoping Claudia was distracted by her clothes sticking together (if his spell had hit, anyway) Drew Banished the mess in front of him, holly leaves and all, in her direction.
