It was time for Potions, otherwise known as the best part of the day... Er, make that second-best. Dating Francine, while occasionally reminding him of why he hadn’t previously gotten along very well with his far more exciteable yearmate, had made some parts much better overall. Namely, the parts where he got to be romantic and make her swoon in public and then take it an entirely different direction in private. (He scoffed at other people’s relationships, sappy couples hand-in-hand, but he quite liked it when it came to him and Francine. It was worth it. Even though she insisted on giving him unnecessary knick-knacks. They were starting to accumulate beyond his half of the dorm; he was optimistic Nick would get annoyed at some point and tell his sister to calm down on the snowglobes and bobbleheads so that he wouldn’t have to.)

The fact that Potions meant being forced into contact with Rob and his stupid dog and stupid jokes further enforced its abruptly demoted ranking to second-best part of the day. Hmph. At least he could get away with ignoring their supposed “professor” for the majority of class.

When they arrived - early, as Lucien always insisted - he pulled Francine into a heated kiss, hands roaming with the freedom of a blessedly shoulder-strapped potions kit, before separating. She’d expressed wanting to work with other friends today, so he headed to an empty area of the lab bench to neatly set up his workstation. Hopefully he would wind up beside a good student. He’d had the distinct misfortune before Midterm to be paired with that younger transfer, Rusty or something, and for the first time ever Lucien had barely been able to keep a potion intact. The kid kept adding Wiggenweld bark instead of willow bark! It was fortunate that he’d put so many hours into studying ingredient properties; he had been able to improvise some hasty additions that countered the Wiggenweld's effects well enough to prevent an explosion.

As it turned out, Danny, the Dubois boy who was of no relation nor particular interest to him, claimed the neighbouring seat. The younger boy was immediately too happy about this for Lucien’s taste. “Yay,” he returned, deadpan, watching with slightly narrowed brown eyes as Danny went off to collect their petri dishes. Who wore clunky boots in a lab? Labs weren’t fashion shows. And rummaging? Fat chance. The Quebecer’s potions kit was fully-stocked, and guaranteed high quality. Having personally collected the required herbal ingredients for today’s potion, well, needless to say he wasn’t about to use someone else’s questionable polygonatum. Shaking his head, Lucien filled his cauldron with water to start boiling for the first step.

“Don’t you have gloves?” was his annoyed response to Danny’s concern, holding up his own already-gloved hand as if to demonstrate the meaning of the word. “Regardless of whether the samples are active, we’re modelling medical potioneering, so we should be following the proper sanitation protocols.” Which admittedly came more from his personal opinion than the explicit directions of their “professor”, but Lucien preferred to keep it realistic, and would have something to say about it if Danny disagreed.

  • That's a sick joke - Dardanius Dubois [5th year Lyra], Fri Mar 3 16:22
Slinging his bookbag onto the floor, but placing down his potions kit with a degree of care, Dardanius clambered clumsily onto his seat and resumed his daily task of inking in the centre of all the... more

      • But laughter is contagious - Dardanius, Sat Mar 4 21:37
Lucien - or the other Dubois, as Danny often thought of him - was exceptionally lacking in sense of humour, but was a competent potioneer. The trade-off of grades for fun wasn't one that the fifth... more
        • Alas, intelligence isn't - Lucien, Mon Mar 6 03:16
It was unlikely, Lucien decided after a moment’s consideration, that Danny was intentionally trying to piss him off by his display of nonverbal magic. But that was still what he did. The oldest... more
          • Danny raised his eyebrows, a little surprised by Lucien’s audible scoff. He knew that the seventh year wasn’t popular among Danny’s own friendship group for his apparent lack of respect for Holland,... more
            • Fine by me. I'm not one for cards. - Lucien, Thu Mar 9 20:35
Taking a clean handkerchief out of his pocket, Lucien began polishing his knife, watching Danny intently as the younger boy stirred their potion. Just because he’d offered him the chance didn’t mean... more
              • You shock and astound me - Danny, Sat Mar 11 15:08
If Danny weren’t already standing he might have fallen off his stool. ‘More than competent?’ He would have asked Lucien when he was planning to propose if he hadn’t been dumbfounded. His silence... more
                • You I find less surprising - Lucien, Sun Mar 12 23:06
For the entire duration that they waited, Lucien moved only twice. The first was merely a startled reaction when Danny pulled out a thermometer too early. Having spent much of his free time during... more
