But laughter is contagious

Lucien - or the other Dubois, as Danny often thought of him - was exceptionally lacking in sense of humour, but was a competent potioneer. The trade-off of grades for fun wasn't one that the fifth year liked to take with any regularity, but it seemed that in this class he would have little choice in the matter.

It didn't take long at all for his partner to confirm these suspicions. It was surprising; Danny didn’t need the rumour mill to inform him that Lucien was dating Francine (he had eyes and had unfortunately witnessed them making out on more than one occasion), and he'd have thought that might have helped the older student to chill out a bit. Apparently not.

“Ah, Lucien, how insightful of you,” Danny teased in reply, wordlessly summoning his high-end potioneering gloves from inside his potions kit, demonstrating one of the very few spells he had been able to master non-verbally. He noticed that nothing else had been removed from his kit, indicating that Lucien had turned down the offer to help himself. Dardanius wondered whether the older student was being polite or pedantic. He strongly suspected it was the latter.

“I do believe standard protocols for brewing medicinal potions include wearing a face mask to prevent contamination,” he said mildly, unable to lift his brown eyes to meet Lucien’s, as he was already struggling to maintain a straight face. “Will you be adhering to that sanitation procedure, too?” he asked, innocently selecting the bicorn horn and wormwood from his own supply stock and pointedly placing them on the bench between them.

As strongly as he was tempted to enquire whether Lucien followed proper sanitation protocols in his activities with Francine, Danny bit his tongue and busied himself pushing up the sleeves of his scarlet sweater to his elbows. He often wore his robes in potions to keep his everyday clothes - which were usually far more expensive than his uniform - protected from potential spills, but it wasn't by any means a steadfast rule. While he usually abided by the regulations put in place by figures of authority, the Lyra did not often impose such restrictions on himself without good reason.
