It was late October, and Marissa Kendrick still wasn’t sure about whether or not she’d throw a big Halloween party.

She wanted to, of course, but time had slipped away from the fifth year. Her party at the beginning of the school year had gone remarkably well, and she’d had a couple of successful mini-events, too. Some of those were just her and Rose being ridiculous in the Aquila dorms, but she’d hosted at least one Aquila Quidditch team hang out in the Rec Center, too. She wanted to throw a Halloween party, but the holiday was fast approaching. She wasn’t ready to do something fun if it was also going to be stressful. What would be the point?

Sighing the sigh of the indecisive, the red head made her way to the Potions classroom. When choosing her classes for the next few years, Potions hadn’t been at the top of her list, but she decided to stick with it. The Aquila wasn’t sure what she wanted to do with her future, so she figured she should try to be well rounded. Some of her classmates already had it all figured out. Marissa felt old enough to start drinking and party the night away, but she didn’t feel old enough to settle firmly on what she’d do for the rest of her life.

It helped that Rob was the professor for Potions. She hadn’t known much about him, since he was new, but since her entire family was basically made of RMI alumni, she’d learned a little more about him. She knew that he was an Aquila when he went to Rocky Mountain International. She also knew that he was Aunt Cosette’s assistant captain of the Quidditch team, which meant once her aunt graduated, he was also the Aquila Quidditch captain.

She’d asked Aunt Cosette, Aaron, and Rob for Quidditch captain advice when she found out she’d be the new captain. Aunt Cosette gave her some Beater drills to practice, and she gave Marissa some unique ideas to use for incentivizing her team. Marissa wasn’t sure she’d use them. Aaron had been a little confused about why she’d asked, which didn’t surprise Marissa. She was pretty sure that Aaron spent most of his time either in a state of flustered confusion or Charms geekery. He seemed maybe a little more confused when she explained that Mom had sent her to ask, but he also gave her a bit of useful advice. Rob reminded her to not work the team too hard, because otherwise she’d scare them away.

Marissa plopped down in the classroom about a minute before Rob got there. She had her wild red hair gathered into a very messy bun. She’d learned quickly as a first year that, if left down, the heat from the cauldrons would make her hair frizz out even more. Once, her hair got so big, it was hard for people to sit by her without getting poked.

Maybe she was exaggerating. Only maybe, though.

She picked lint off of her black v-neck shirt and ripped skinny jeans while Rob greeted them. Her robes were abandoned somewhere, probably in her room. The older she got, the less she cared about meeting expectations when it came to school uniforms. She was wearing combat boots with a slight heel, noticeable because she’d propped up her feet on the chair next to her.

Rob introduced the lesson, and the idea of getting to keep a completed potion made her grin. She couldn’t think of any reason to have the potion with her, but she couldn’t think of a reason not to have it with her. Perhaps that’d make up for the ridiculously long time the potion would take to brew.

While she was re-reading the list of steps on the board, someone tapped her shoulder. Marissa turned her head to look at whoever it was getting her attention.
