Well I'm certainly not losing

Oh Merlin, had Ruben just punched a rock? Rose snorted and tried to prevent herself from entering full-on giggles. Blasting the rock was something she expected, but it took a special kind of person to straight up punch a rock, even a rock that was headed for him. If he had noticed it (and Rose had been hoping he wouldn’t, with the other distraction), she had expected him to do something normal like dodge, not punch the thing. This was absolutely hilarious and Rose was having a hard time focusing. A couple of giggles escaped her as she noticed that Ruben’s hand was bleeding. Not that she found people getting injured funny - okay yes sometimes she did - but this was absolutely hilarious. She couldn’t wait to tell Marissa.

The distraction made her slow, and although she managed to get out of the way of Ruben’s first spell, the second one hit her and she suddenly found herself a foot and a half off the ground, held by one ankle as though by an invisible force. That resettled her attention on the event at hand, and she quickly thought about what to do. She knew the counterspell, but Rose was also disinclined to land on her head in the middle of a duel. Or at all, really. Ugh okay.

Throwing up a shield charm with a wave of her wand (she was pretty good at nonverbal magic; the wandless part was the hard bit for her), Rose flicked her wand at the ground and muttered a quick “Spongify” which turned the mat below her into a squishy, spongy texture. She then muttered the counterspell in the direction of her ankle and felt the magic release as she tumbled down. Rose managed to land on her shoulder instead of her head with a quick twist that she attributed to her Seeker reflexes, and bounced up, managing to land on her feet with only a little bit of a stumble.

  • As he jumped out of the hole, Ruben overheard the spell she used on his first ball of thorns. It wasn't one he recognized, which he supposed wasn't too unusual: if he imagined taking his Dark Arts... more

Excellent. He’d caught her. A swell of satisfaction washed over him as he watched his jinx hoist Rose into the air. Technically, his was the first injury, but he didn’t think it exactly counted. She... more
