I would appreciate a hand with this

It was one of Those days. Russell sighed and shook another Advil out of the bottle.

On Those days, he woke up with a pounding headache for no clear reason. Headaches weren’t unfamiliar to him; when he spent significant time outside (significant here meaning anything over ten minutes) or in brighter-lit rooms, he quite often developed a minor one. But on Those days, the headache seemed to start while he was still asleep, because the first sensation he had upon shifting out of his subconscious was that of skull-splitting pain. This was the first time that he’d had one of Those days this month. It used to happen a couple times a week when he was younger, so he supposed he should be grateful that it had improved, but he couldn’t really feel grateful when his brain hurt too much to think about anything else.

He took a sip of pineapple juice to get the pill down and then, contemplating it a moment, popped another one, because class was starting soon which would probably require thinking and it couldn’t hurt to double up in preparation for that. Stuffing the small bottle in the right pocket of his cargo shorts, he poked his index finger in the left pocket and brushed it lightly over Jaws’ fur. A twitching nose met his finger soon after. While Russell couldn’t muster up the energy to smile at the contact, he did feel marginally better with his mouse-friend (literally) close at hand.

Arriving to find what seemed like the entire student body in the lab didn’t help his headache. Why was it that other students talked so loudly? Ducking his head, Russell found a place to stand that didn’t come off as too crowded and waited with moderate patience for class to start. To pass the time, he pulled off the bandana that he had hastily wrapped around his head this morning and retied it more neatly. His hair was a mess; he’d knotted it back in a bun two days ago, but fell asleep without pulling it out, and then hadn’t been bothered to fix it yesterday and slept on it again, and by now it was just one big tangle. The bandana helped, he thought hoped. Its shade of light-ripe-pear-grey was the same grey used in the camo pattern of his shorts, so it even matched, too.

Russell was more confident with wandwork than almost any other subject. He’d put a ton of effort into practicing spells during his studies before coming to RMI - which wasn’t terribly surprising because what else was he going to do all day living in California, practically the sunniest place alive? To the surprise of both himself and his private tutor, he had managed to cast a nonverbal Summoning Charm once by accident, and with some work, had managed to continue to do so intentionally. But he had never tried wandless magic. That was supposed to be pretty hard. Needless to say, he had resigned himself to relying on his younger partner to get them through the class before his wand had even left his hand.

Rubbing his forehead in a failed attempt at distracting himself from his headache, Russell didn’t move when everyone began pairing up. Instead, he waited for one of the younger students to approach, because that saved him the decision. When a student came up to him, he gave them a half-hearted “Hullo.”, blinking at them from behind his sunglasses.

  • Look Ma, No Hands! [Spellwork, ALL YEARS] - Professor Aaron McKindy, Fri Apr 7 17:35
“So this is a little bit of an unusual lesson,” Aaron McKindy said, entirely unnecessarily. It was unnecessary because all of the gathered students had already realized that, presumably once they... more

            • Looks like another puzzle to me - Holland, Sat Apr 15 19:02
Hunter was unsurprisingly optimistic about doing a spell he couldn’t remember learning. The sixteen-year-old left Hunter to it and focused on the lock. They knew a bit about how locks worked; Monty... more

        • Does that mean we each get one? - Russell, Mon Apr 10 18:51
The younger boy was dressed pretty formal. Russell didn’t understand why some students always wore their robes to classes. Was it actually a part of the dress code? He couldn’t remember - well, he... more

Danny reassured her that the newly sealed doorway was nothing unexpected. At least, it would've been reassuring, if it weren't for the fact that Marley wasn't actually worried about it. They had... more
