Hold my butterbeer. I got this.

Classes at RMI were pretty weird, but Teal didn’t think a professor had ever had all the years all together all at once. What in Merlin’s name could Prof. Aaron be planning? This sounded like something Dad would do. Apparently he’d made everyone play flashlight tag one time? (Mom backed that up, so she believed him). In case of similar vigorous activities, Teal wore actual sneakers instead of more fun shoes. The suspiciously clean shoes poked out from her jeans. On top of that, she had a deep green t-shirt shirt which nicely balanced looking cute and being practical, and then her robes. The shirt brought out the green in her hazel eyes.

Not that Teal was trying to look cute. She was always cute, right? She just wanted to look nice, because Raja would be there. Teal wished you could Banish thoughts, because her freckly face was turning pink. Nope, she ordered herself as she braided her hair back, we’re not thinking about Raja right now. It was time for class! And class was for thinking about class. Spellwork was usually pretty fun and interesting. It wasn’t Teal’s best class only because she was pretty good in all her classes. She usually got half E’s and half O’s, and had never gotten an Acceptable. Mom and Dad wouldn’t be angry, but they’d probably be disappointed. She didn’t do it for them (school was interesting!), but they were always there as a motivator.

Teal tried to avoid looking for Raja in the crowd of students. It was easy, because there was a CAT. The cat was silvery and very pretty and looked very soft. Teal wriggled her fingers, but the cat clearly wasn’t interested. She frowned at the fluffy animal as it pounced back up to Prof. McKindy. That was his cat! Teal decided she would have to stop by the professor’s office for some reason. Prof. McKindy petted the cat some more before remembering he had students, which Teal totally understood. Godzilla wasn’t especially cuddly, being an iguana, but you could play with him. You could tell your annoying little sister to come back later, but if Zilla wanted attention, you couldn’t explain that you had to take the garbage out. You had to give him scritchies.

Teal jealously watched the cat until Prof. McKindy stole the older students’ wands. This was crazy! She was often gobsmacked by things Prof. McKindy did, like turn a bubble hat into frogs (or wearing a hat made of bubbles in the first place). But stopping students from using their wands? Wandless magic was supposed to be, like, really hard. Even Dad never did it, and he used to teach Charms here! Prof. McKindy must be really, really good at wandwork. Obviously, because he taught it. But he did all sorts of crazy things like conjuring doors without speaking, and Teal knew he taught the animagus classes for upper-years. Still, she was impressed. I want to do that!

Once Prof. McKindy explained what they were doing, Teal smushed her disappointment that she couldn’t work with Raja and examined the older students. Some of them were so tall! Or so pretty! Teal also smushed her fear that no one would want to work with her. Well, she had a secret weapon. She’d meant to save it for Raja, but it would work on anyone. Good thing robes had pockets. Teal stuck her wand behind her ear and approached a possible victim partner.

“Hi, you look smart. Want to work together?” She pulled a small, folded paper bag out of her pocket and opened it to show the Bertie Bott’s label. “Also I have beans. You know, in case we get stuck in there for too long.”
