When they were doing an all-years class, it was almost guaranteed that there would be a somewhat physical component to the activity. Professor McKindy in particular seemed to like to mix up the standard grade groupings (one to three, four and five, six and seven), which Holland appreciated. Holland wasn’t sure whether or not they liked the idea of teaching, but working with the underclassmen and -women was fun. They enjoyed helping younger students and showing their skills, and it was sometimes helpful to get a refresher on spells Holland’s year had already learned. Their recent Spellwork homework involved the sorts of spells the first and second years had just begun.

In preparation for running an obstacle course or conducting an Easter egg hunt or whatever, Holland had worn jeans, and a dark green blazer over a beige shirt that said “Cinnamon rolls, not gender roles” bordered by stylized cartoons of the aforementioned dessert. Their hair today was wandlessly-charmed green, although the brown roots were slightly longer than Holland liked to have them. Still, it was good work for wandless magic, and almost shockingly close to what they had intended. For footwear, they’d chosen their black and grey Oxfords; ordinarily they paired this top with brown boots, but something with laces and no heel was probably a better idea for today’s class.

Their speculation about today’s all-years activity was interrupted by a “Hey” and a pair of arms encircling their waist from behind. Holland started, although their brain recognized the voice the moment before Ruben put his chin on their shoulder. Holland didn’t especially like being surprised in this way, but they relaxed a bit. Ruben meant well. “Pretty well,” Holland answered. “What do you think Professor McKindy is up to with everyone here?” Professor Rasnick might have them work against the younger students, but Professor McKindy would probably set up something collaborative for the Spellwork students. “He does obstacle courses sometimes, but we’re not in the Outdoor Classroom or on the Pitch. I’d say dueling, but that’s more of an Ivy thing.”

Professor McKindy cut that conversation short by explaining what he was up to, which was a sort of obstacle course, with the twist that they would be working with the younger years and wandless. They disliked that Professor McKindy summoned their wands away instead of asking for them—it made them feel on edge to have their wand suddenly taken—but there really was no harm. Besides, it was a good challenge. Normal cross-year partner work typically involved the older students tutoring or using more advanced spells. This put them on a similar level with their partners.

Instead of finding a partner when they were released, Holland found a doorway, with the idea that it would be easier than wandering around trying to find a partner. Other people were pairing off and disappearing into their doorways, so Holland took a moment to study theirs. There was nothing on the other side, and a red curtain covered the door. “Hey,” they said, with a cheerful wave at the younger student who approached them first. “Ready to get started? Also, do you think the door leads into wizardspace or an invisible room?” They were two different things, conceptually.

  • Look Ma, No Hands! [Spellwork, ALL YEARS] - Professor Aaron McKindy, Fri Apr 7 17:35
“So this is a little bit of an unusual lesson,” Aaron McKindy said, entirely unnecessarily. It was unnecessary because all of the gathered students had already realized that, presumably once they... more

            • Looks like another puzzle to me - Holland, Sat Apr 15 19:02
Hunter was unsurprisingly optimistic about doing a spell he couldn’t remember learning. The sixteen-year-old left Hunter to it and focused on the lock. They knew a bit about how locks worked; Monty... more
