An excellent sentiment

She was giving him an escape, offering to chat instead. While tempted to take the opportunity, Danny had already spent one party chatting to Camilla when she would rather have been dancing; it wasn't fair to do it to her again. “I don’t mind trying,” he said, smiling because she obviously remembered from before that he didn’t like to dance at Marissa’s parties, and it was nice that she was taking account of his feelings. If it turned out he was terrible at dancing, then they could chat. Probably about how terrible he was at dancing.

It wasn’t that he was against the activity it general, just that he wasn’t very good at spontaneous, unchoreographed movement. He liked the familiar, regimented dances he had been taught growing up, that he danced occasionally at society balls. Perhaps one day they should have a more formal ball at RMI, Danny considered Then he would, for once, be ahead of the game on the dancefloor. Marissa loved to dance, so she could probably be convinced to try something a little more traditional. Until then, however, he would have to learn to adapt. He had plenty of practise watching other people dance at these sort of events, and he had picked out the beat in the song that was playing - it wasn’t a slow song, but was calm enough that dancing close as they were wasn’t going to be problematic. Wildly out of his comfort zone, Danny took hold of Camilla’s free hand, the one that wasn’t on his shoulder, and, with his other hand still on the small of her back, he started to dance.

As they moved, Danny took advantage of the opportunity to look over Camilla’s shoulder, investigating the rest of the party. He could see plenty of couples, as was to be expected from a party with this theme. He didn’t even need to search for Marissa, her bright hair like a beacon even in the dimly lit passageways, and she was with Russell from the year below. Rose seemed to have been partnered with Emmett in a pink jacket, and Fairytale Holland was talking with Ruben. He also saw that Lucien had, actually, made an appearance; Danny didn’t expect anything to kick off at the party, but he would probably try to keep Camilla away from him, just in case there was any residual negativity from their confrontation in the Diner.

“Hey,” Danny said to Camilla, his voice now back to its more familiar teasing tones, “I heard you spilled your breakfast recently. Yogurt, if I remember correctly.” Now seemed as good a time as any to bring it up. He waited to gauge her reaction; if she didn’t want to talk about it he would drop it immediately. It was probably no secret that Lucien wasn’t on good terms right now with any of the fifth years, or any of the Lyras - and Danny was both - so Camilla should feel safe discussing her run in with Lucien, but perhaps it wasn’t something she really wanted to relive.
