Then we'll get on just fine

“In that case, let me know if you have any ideas,” he told Holland. Ruben had noticed pretty quickly that the uniform RMI claimed to have was not closely followed, neither by students nor professors. Unaware of this for his first day of class at RMI, he had dressed as he thought he was expected to: dark robe snugly fastened up to his collarbone, hair tied back in the familiarly pinching braid. Taking his cue from the others, he had lost the chair for his second day of class, and by the third day, he had cheerfully abandoned the robe as well. Now he wore whatever he wanted, all the time.

It was a nice freedom. It was a little strange, too, to go from robes to his preferred clothes. There was a sort of pressure to shake up his outfit every day, for instance, which was accomplished easily enough (he had found some cheap shops and thrifts over the years and accumulated a good collection) but still had taken up more of his time in the mornings than he’d predicted. Of course he had focused on clothes over hair, for now. His clothes made a statement every day - perhaps the same statement, but differently each time. His head, meanwhile, was just happy for the relapse to looser hair. Holland made a good point, though - no (real) uniform standards meant he really should be taking more advantage of it for his hair.

Ruben didn’t attend many gatherings where people, well, actually danced. There was a style of moshing colloquially referred to as dance that he was naturally fluent in, but it had what he assumed would be probably too much kicking, spinning, windmilling arms, and general risk of injury to be appreciated by Holland or anyone else in a two-metre radius. It was also totally unsuitable to the music. This song wasn’t bad, though, so he nodded to Holland’s question as he diligently stole and imitated the casual movements of students around them (what was up with all this shoulder and hip crap?). The benefit of years of martial arts was that he was both flexible and observant enough to copy most any physical moves. “Ja, he is picking some nice songs.”

He hadn’t interacted a ton with Armaan, but of course he had met him - they were in the same House, and Ruben, despite his wanderings, did wind up back in Aquila often enough to bump into both his older and younger housemates. Speaking of which... “Marissa and Armaan together seem to have worked out this party very good,” he added at the reminder of his house-and-yearmate, having briefly spotted her with a rather brightly-dressed student. Not that he was one to judge style choices, of course; to each their own (though his was best). Taking advantage of the rubber on his shoe to plant his heel and do a quick spin, he completed it with a little ‘ta-da!’ hand flair and cracked up at his own joke. Well, it wasn’t technically a joke, but it had been ridiculous and that was good enough.

“Okay,” he said decisively, shaking off residual laughter with ease, “how does someone dance with a partner to this music? It is not my area of-” There was a word supposed to go there. He mouthed a few different options as they came to mind. Nope, he forgot how that phrase went. “Well, not my strength. But if we do this?” He held out both his hands to Holland, quite intentionally reaching towards both of hens rather than the shoulder/waist positions that they had learned for the rare formal dance at Durmstrang, because that brought up the question of leading vs. following. Of course, if Holland went for something like that, he’d go along, but Ruben didn’t want to push hen into choosing a side, especially when this type of music didn’t justify formal dance anyways. “And then...?” He wiggled his arms and shoulders experimentally with a grin, taking a step closer to narrow the distance between them.
